It's considered one of the finest arias in all opera.In the scores, the solo part plays both Delilah's and Samson's parts. In the duets period, Delilah's part is played by the piano and the solo instrument plays Samson's part. It resonates with my own longing for my father, who passed away seven years prior to the creation of this work. Just as Ikkyu's poem reflects a yearning for a connection with the past, this music embodies my own journey of grief, memory, and the search for peace in the echoes of loss. The intertwining of my personal narrative with Ikkyu’s profound words aims to offer a universal contemplation on the themes of absence, longing, and the ephemeral nature of existence.In creating this work, my aim has been to offer not just a musical experience, but a doorway into the profound simplicity of Zen thought. The piece is directly inspired by the 20th century painting La Danse (1910) and the artistic philosophies of its painter Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954). Matisse constantly chose to seek the beauty and joy in life despite his own personal struggles and pain. His art serves as a reminder to us all that even in the most difficult times when beauty and joy can seem almost trivial, they are actually worth fighting for and can help us find hope and perseverance. Dance (2018) is my way of trying to channel these philosophies into music while also trying to translate the bold lines and vivid colors of his painting which are used to convey an almost ancient connection to humanity and joy. I encourage listeners and performers to have as much fun engaging in this piece as I did writing it. Enjoy!
