Romance for French Horn by Elizabeth Raum was originally commissioned by the Canadian Music Competition as a test piece.The work is lush and with rich harmonies of about 5 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by moderately advanced performers.Kurt Kellan, past principal horn with the Calgary Philharmonic, had often asked Elizabeth Raum to orchestrate this piece, so when the occasion arose for a new piece for the 2001 Prairie Festival of New Music, she decided to adapt the piece for Trombone and orchestrate it. The orchestration of single flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, bassoon and strings works with solo horn, trombone, bassoon, viola, or cello.

Director of the Hampton Institute, Dett developed the college's choir with his compositions and conducting into one of the leading choirs in the nation.  Always looking to improve his compositional capabilities, Dett studied with notable teachers such as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music. This brass quintet arrangement is scored for two B-flat trumpets (alternate C trumpet parts included), horn in F (alternate flugelhorn substitute part), trombone and tuba. 'Pomp and Circumstance Military March No. 1' with its middle section, the hymn-like 'Land of Hope and Glory' by Edward Elgar (1857–1934), belongs to the finale of the London music event like the Radetzky March usually played as last piece to the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The fame and popularity of the other four military marches composed by Elgar between 1901 and 1907 fade in comparison to this secret national anthem of Great Britain (although strongly rivalled by 'Rule, Britannia!'). It is, indeed, an equally rousing and catchy piece of music, and the catchy tune in the middle has just become a classical 'hit'. Thanks to the present edition, all those who do not have a large symphony orchestra at home can now play this rousing march by themselves.

Written in 2010 for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Wigglesworth's nine-minute work explores the idea of perpetuum mobile (continuous movement) in seven connected, miniature inventions. A regular pulse forms the work’s core, with elaborations of the central musical idea shifting constantly around it in jagged rhythms and sumptuous orchestration. The composer writes, The seven sections can very briefly be described thus: 1) an active, miniature 'theme and variations'; 2) the juxtaposition of various fragmentary two-part inventions; 3) a tremolo string ostinato with woodwind interjections, building towards the first climax; 4) an ostinato passing between horns and muted trumpets together with a dialogue for high woodwind and low strings; 5) a very slow canon for string harmonics and pizzicato double basses; 6) a fast, one-part invention beginning with solo piccolo, and gradually leading to the second climax; 7) chorale.
