I saw her on two occasions performing in Jordan Hall: once as the soloist in a Shostakovich Cello Concerto in Jordan Hall with Hugh Wolff and the NEC Philharmonic and then in an Honors String Quartet concert with Nico in Jordan Hall.  Both concerts were in the spring of 2019, and they were fantastic.  I was so impressed with her and her quartet that I wrote a string quartet for them that summer, NICO.  They recorded it for me @ NEC in the fall and I love the recording.  The next thing I did was to write a violin sonata for Minami Yoshida, the first violinist of Nico.  It is called Mi-la-mi, after her name.  Then I wrote this work for Claire, Kim’s American name.   When I asked her what was the meaning of 803 in her email address, she said that is the street number of her apartment in Korea.  So, that is how the title Trio 803 came about. Trio 803 (2020) is in five movements.  1. Adagio, Andante moderato 2. Adagio 3. Allegro con moto, TRIO 4. Adagio 5. Vivace, TRIO Enjoy!

'TRON' is a 1982 American science fiction action adventure film starring Jeff Bridges as a computer programmer and video game developer who is transported inside the software world of a mainframe computer where he interacts with programs in his attempt to escape. The soundtrack album was composed by Wendy Carlos with two additional tracks performed by the band Journey. Carlos came to prominence with 'Switched-On Bach' (1968), an album of music by Johann Sebastian Bach performed on a Moog synthesizer, which helped popularize its use in the 1970s and won her three Grammy Awards; the combination of synthesiser and live musicians (provided by the London Philharmonic Orchestra) for TRON can be seen as a benchmark for later scores using this innovative approach, although Carlos was initially not happy with the result after the film was released. This lovely theme is heard throughout the film and has been arranged for concert band (with additional part for Cor Anglais, where available) to expand the worldwide repertoire of music by women composers as part of an ongoing project. #ArrangeMeGoals2023.

Inspired by the theme of America the Beautiful, I decided to portray the actual beauty of the land, rather than to use Katharine Lee Bates and Samuel Ward's famous song as a musical reference. Thus, Enchanted Landscapes was composed as a single-movement Symphonic Poem,  which transforms various visual elements of our magical views into an audible experience. The main melody is vast; Spanning over 30 measures, it conveys the feeling of spaciousness. Then, the same long melody repeats in a different, higher key. The middle part of the composition presents a fanfare-like theme, which builds up through both dynamics and polyphonic means. This section, dominated mainly by the brass and wind instruments, brings in a sense of drama, mystery, and purple mountain majesties. Finally, the use of Melodica sound in the otherwise traditional orchestration, adds a feeling of nostalgia and longing to the pure and proud landscape that watches upon us constantly, and connects us with the earth, with nature, and with ourselves.
