The Fantasy Pieces are full of Romanticism and thoughtfulness to make it an important and entertaining work. This version has been skillfully arranged for Tenor Trombone and Piano by Ralph Sauer, formerly Principal Trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

During the composer's lifetime, the operetta enjoyed great success, second only to the popularity of Die Fledermaus (The bat). The Ouverture is a very popular piece, often performed during concerts but it normally requires large orchestral forces: hence the present arrangement, which only requires 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet, 1 bassoon, 1 horn, 2 percussion players, and strings.P.S.: if you want to listen to a beautiful performance of this Ouverture check out the Vienna Philharmonic with Carlos Kleiber. 'Pomp and Circumstance Military March No. 1' with its middle section, the hymn-like 'Land of Hope and Glory' by Edward Elgar (1857–1934), belongs to the finale of the London music event like the Radetzky March usually played as last piece to the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The fame and popularity of the other four military marches composed by Elgar between 1901 and 1907 fade in comparison to this secret national anthem of Great Britain (although strongly rivalled by 'Rule, Britannia!'). It is, indeed, an equally rousing and catchy piece of music, and the catchy tune in the middle has just become a classical 'hit'. Thanks to the present edition, all those who do not have a large symphony orchestra at home can now play this rousing march by themselves.

The woodwind play a larger part in this version to add more colour and cover some of the original choral part that appear in the original. Timpani has been reduced to be able to be played by just one player on just 3 timpani. The ending has been altered so that if finishes on a shock chord instead of the original's long held, dying away chord.
