By Euphonium/Baritone Solo with Band. By Herman Bellstedt. Arranged by Richard Jones. Classical. Brass Band. 61 pages. Richard Jones #1065695. Published by Richard Jones (A0.1488841).

Betty Lee is an example of a theme and variation or fantasia style of writing that was popular at the end of the 19th century and the fists quarter of the 20th century. In most instances the piece would involve a folk or national tune that becomes more complicated as it progresses. Whislt many British composers such as Round and Hartmann were renowned for writing these style of pieces, American virtuoso players were equally adept, including Herbert Clarke, Frank Simon and others.

Herman Bellstedt was amongst these virtuoso player/cpmposer combinations. He was born in Bremen in Germany, but moved to Cincinnati, Ohio when he was 9. He quickly gained a reputation as a fine cornet player, playing as a soloist with most bands in his area and beyond, earning him the title 'Boy Wonder'. Soon he was performing with the top bands in the US, including the Patrick Gilmore and John Philip Sousa Band, in the latter sharing solos with cornet sensations Herbert L. Clarke and Walter B. Rodgers.

During this period he also started as Professor of Wind Instruments at Cincinnati Conservatory, where he continued to work on his composition projects. The most famous of these composition are Napoli, Fantasie No.1, Capriccio Brilliante and a version of Carnival of Venice; Betty Lee is a lesser known piece to these but equally provides a technical challenge.

It is a must for all intermediate to advanced performers.

Composed by John Stafford Smith. Arranged by Thomas Coker. Folk,Patriotic. Octavo. 4 pages. Thomas Rembert Coker Jr #3503513. Published by Thomas Rembert Coker Jr (A0.933611).

In 2009 when Sanctuary Choir of South Main Baptist Church in Houston where I served as Music Minister was scheduled to sing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros baseball game, I carefully examined the several arrangements in our library and other resources. Finding nothing which met the simple, straight-forward criteria I was searching for, we created this simple arrangement. Since its addition to the music library it has proven very useful on numerous occasions for a variety of groups.

About the National Anthem:

The lyrics for The Star-Spangled Banner were written on September 14, 1814 from a British ship in the Baltimore Harbor where attorney Francis Scott Key had waited anxiously through the night as the twenty-five hour bombing of Ft. McHenry progressed. He had been sent to negotiate the release of an American civilian and then was held on board the ship.  At the dawn’s early light when the flag could still be seen indicating the British had not taken the fort, he jotted down this poem which on March 3, 1931 finally became the National Anthem of the United States.

Interestingly, it was Robert Ripley who in November of 1929 drew a panel in his syndicated cartoon, Ripley’s Believe It or Not stating Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem. With the encouragement of John Philip Sousa, President Herbert Hoover signed into law the adoption of The Star-Spangled Banner to rectify this situation.

According to the Smithsonian, the melody, written by John Stafford Smith, was originally titled Anacreon in Heaven. Anacreon was an ancient Greek poet known for his love of wine and love. The song had become the constitutional song of a London gentlemen’s club called the Anacreontic Society. Could this explain the wide range of the melody? By utilizing this tune to the moving text, this once merry drinking song took on a bold new and powerful meaning.

Composed by Thomas W. Carter. Arranged by Marc Oliver. 20th Century. Score and parts. 53 pages. Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #2347383. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733030).

Boston Commandery is a Masonic march written by Thomas W. Carter in 1892. It was dedicated to the regional office of the Freemasony that was headquartered in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. In the march, Carter used the hymn Onward Christians Soldiers by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan as the melody for the trio, with the woodwinds providing the obbligato above the music. There have been many composers who were Masons; among them are Edward E. Bagley, W. Paris Chambers, Herbert L. Clarke, Merle Evans, Henry Fillmore, Karl L. King and John Philip Sousa. And Freemasony also includes in its ranks such musical luminaries as Louis Armstrong, Gene Autry, Count Basie, Ludwig van Beethoven, Irving Berlin, Roy Clark, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Paul Whiteman.

SKU: A0.782192

Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by James Haynor. 20th Century. Score and parts. 176 pages. James Haynor #3366111. Published by James Haynor (A0.782192).

Written in 1922 , The Serenaders is the first movement of a little known suite titled Impressions - At the Movies by John Phillip Sousa. Originally scored for military band, The Serenaders is a delightful musical depiction of a college student trying to woo co-eds at a neighboring university. Subsequent movements include: The Crafty Villain and the Timid Maid and Balance All and Swing Partners.

Transcribed for double brass quintet, the piece retains it’s exuberance and flair for whimsy and evokes the era of Sunday afternoon concerts in the park. From Herbert L. Clarke-like cornet solos/cadenzas and quintet duels to rousing tutti sections, this is an all out crowd pleaser. Only Sousa sounds like this!
