SKU: A0.1347230

Composed by Philippe De Vitry. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Medieval. 10 pages. Jmsgu3 #932030. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1347230).

The motet O canenda/Rex regum by Philippe de Vitry is significant as it represents the emergence of the classic isorhythmic motet, which simultaneously sets a pair of texts in its two upper voices. Philippe de Vitry, a 14th-century French composer, is considered a leading figure in the changes that occurred in French music around 1325. His motets, including O canenda/Rex regum, are regarded as strikingly individual, exploiting unique structural ideas. They are part of the early development of the ars nova style of composition, which introduced new rhythmic and notational techniques.

The structure of Philippe de Vitry's motet O canenda/Rex regum is characterized by the classic isorhythmic motet, which sets a pair of texts simultaneously in its two upper voices. This composition represents the emergence of the ars nova style of late medieval music, introducing new rhythmic and notational techniques. The repeated rhythmic patterns of the tenor do not necessarily accord with melodic ones, and the motet is known for packing symbols and thematic subtleties into each short piece. Philippe de Vitry's motets, including O canenda/Rex regum, are strikingly individual, contributing to the evolution of musical forms and representing innovative trends in 14th-century French music.

The text of motets from this period often contained religious, secular, or courtly love themes. The words rex regum et dominus dominancium from the motet evoke the notion of an earthly king who emulates Christ on his heavenly seat as he assumes his throne. The text likely reflects the religious or secular themes commonly found in motet compositions of that era.

Philippe de Vitry, a French composer, poet, and music theorist, was born on October 31, 1291, and died on June 9, 1361. Philippe de Vitry's O Canenda/Rex regum was composed around 1320. He was appointed Bishop of Meaux on 3 January 1351 and held this post until his death.

Madonna il tuo bel viso,
Che nel gran mar d'Amor m'è duc'e scorta

Hora tien viva mia speranz', hor morta
Hora tien viva mia speranz', hor morta
Et qualhor scorg' in esso un bel sereno

Spiega la vela al vento,
Senza temer di
scogli'o di procella:
Ma se la luce nel
camin vien meno,

Ripiena di spavento,
Cala la vela alla
sua navicella,
All' instabil'
tua stella,

Scorre l'onde
fallace a dritt' e a torto,
Et tem' e sper' e
mai non vede 'l porto.
Et tem' e sper' e
mai non vede 'l porto.

My Lady your fair face
My captain and companion
through the great sea of love

Sometimes it keeps my hope alive
sometimes it slays it Sometimes it
keeps my hope alive only then to die.
And when I spy in it fine fair weather

Spreads out its sail to catch the wind
with out fear of rocks and raging storms
But if the light that shows my way grows fainter

my hope is filled with terror
lowers the sheets that sped
the little boat it sails in
No longer trusting your star

Running from treach'rous wave
hither and thither
and fears and hopes
but never sees safe harbour
and fears and hopes
and never sees safe harbour.

Mendelssohn, Reger and in particular J.S.Bach are amongst the composers who have based compositions on this melody. It is particularly suitable for use in the season of Advent.

SKU: A0.726150

Composed by French Noël, 16th century. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Advent,Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 4 pages. Con Spirito Music #6735019. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.726150).

O Come, Divine Messiah! is a hymn by Abbé Simon-Joseph Pellegrin (1663-1745), a French poet, playwright, and librettist who collaborated with Jean-Philippe Rameau and other composers. In addition to stage plays and opera libretti, his works included two collections of carols, published in 1708 and 1711.

Pellegrin’s text for this hymn communicates the longing for a Redeemer by a world enslaved in sin, and is therefore appropriate for the season of expectation and preparation that is Advent. The tune, however - a 16th-century French Noël - is sprightly and cheerful, making this anthem especially fitting for the third Sunday of Advent - Gaudete Sunday, which derives its name from the introit for the day, Rejoice (Gaudete) in the Lord always.
