Jesus lifted up his eyes while sitting on a mount.
There a multitude had come, where thousands was the count.
Jesus asked of Philip then, “Whence shall we buy some bread?�
Feeding hungry souls was such a way the Master led.

One small lad had barley loaves, just five that day were found.
And small fishes, only two, were set upon the ground.
“Bring them hither,� Jesus said, then blessed and brake the loaves.
These became like manna there, this miracle to show.

Jesus asked disciples close to share the scanty feast.
Each did eat, not sparingly, ‘til all were filled and pleased.
Then He called disciples there to gather what remained;
Twelve full baskets still were left, all through the Savior’s Name.

Jesus also fills our lives when we might have a lack.
Needing aid we lend our best, then He gives as we act.
Listening to all we pledge He takes each offering,
Always giving more to us than what we humbly bring.

Chorus:
Granting needs and pure desires is what our Savior seeks.
As He fills our daily cups, we aid his heartfelt plea.
He will ever honor us by giving what we lack.
This, this precious miracle, is what He gives us back.

      Howard W. Petrie was a composer of popular music active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of his most popular songs was “I Don’t Want to Play in Your Yard,� published early in his career, 1894. The song underwent a revival in the mid-1950s when Peggy Lee recorded it. It also figured prominently in the popular 1981 film Reds.

Lyrics are credited to Philip Wingate, and his first verse sets up the story. Two little girls were next-door neighbors and best of friends. One day, however, a quarrel arose and “hot tears were shared.� One announced, “You can’t play in our yard.� The reply of the other forms the familiar chorus:

I don't want to play in your yard, I don't like you any more,

You'll be sorry when you see me sliding down our cellar door,

You can't holler down our rain-barrel, you can't climb our apple tree,

I don't want to play in your yard, if you won't be good to me.

      The second verse tells of the reconciliation. The two girls miss each other. They kiss and make up and remain friends “all thro’ life.� But “in sweet dreams of childhood� we still remember the controversy of the yard.

      This version features the group's Trumpets somewhat taking the roles of the two little girls. It retains the F major key in which it was written, changes tempo four times (in addition to a few rallentando/a tempo instructions) and includes two short, rather simple cadenzas, one for each Trumpet. It starts (rather incongruously!) with the eight 4/4 measures of “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary� then transitions to ¾ for the remainder of the piece.

      Trumpets predominate with melody and lead. However Horn and Trombone do occasionally come to the fore to provide introductions, call-and-response figures and recapitulations. Both Trumpets play a few notes above their staff—G# and A—but for the most part, all instruments perform within their normal playing range. Performance time is about three and a half minutes to perform.

      Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 34 seconds. This fanfare was written to enter the Arts Active's Fanfare Competition, in celebration of St. David's Hall 40th Birthday. In writing this piece, I researched the musical history of St. David’s Hall. Unfortunately, it has proven very difficult to find specific songs/pieces from some of the key events (the only clip I could find was the Cory Band playing John Mile’s Music), so I focused on brass bands and Wales.

The pieces incorporates Men of Harlech (Rhyfelgyrch Gwŷr Harlech), Land of My Fathers (Hen Wlad fy Nhadau) and Philip Sparke’s The Year of the Dragon. Growing up with brass band, I heard Men of Harlech a lot and it has always been my “go to� Welsh piece. Land of My Fathers is the unofficial anthem of Wales. As for The Year of the Dragon, it was used both times that St. David’s Hall has hosted the European Brass Band Championships: it was used as the set test pieces in 1986 for Desford Colliery Dowty Band’s historic victory (under Howard Snell) and as the own choice test piece in 1992 as part of Britannia Building Society (now Fodens) Band’s winning performances (again under Howard Snell). The Year of the Dragon is also a popular piece of music in the brass-band world and has much significance to me personally.

The name of piece comes from the GPS location of St. David’s Hall (51.48022° N, 3.17653° W), rounded to the nearest integer: the actual location of 51° N, 3° W is just off of the A378 in North Curry in Taunton, Somerset, England. 

The competition stipulated that the fanfare was to be composed for a maximum of five standard brass band instruments and so was written for 2 Cornets, Tenor Horn, Trombone or Euphonium and Eb Bass. An additional score and parts have been provided for a more traditional brass quintet set up.

Seventy-Six Trombones is the signature song from the 1957 musical play The Music Man (1957), written by Meredith Willson. The piece is also commonly played by marching and military bands.

Leroy Anderson wrote a popular arrangement of the piece integrating other popular marches, including Stars and Stripes Forever and The Washington Post March by John Philip Sousa, the National Emblem march by Edwin Eugene Bagley, the Swedish march Under blÃ¥gul fana (Under the Blue and Yellow Flag) by Viktor Widqvist, and the Second Regiment, Connecticut National Guard march by D. W. Reeves.

This arrangement for string quartet includes the following parts: Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello. It is suitable for repertoire, classroom and recital.
