SKU: A0.726082

Composed by Philipp Nicolai / J.S. Bach. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christmas,Sacred. Score and parts. 14 pages. Con Spirito Music #3897165. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.726082).

Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (How Brightly Shines the Morning Star) was written by the German Lutheran pastor, poet, and composer Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608) and published in a collection of his hymns in 1599. Based on Psalm 45, Nicolai's text identifies Jesus Christ as the celestial bridegroom of the psalm and with the bright morning star described in Revelation 22:16.

Nicolai also authored and published the hymn, Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Sleepers, Wake! A Voice Astounds Us) in the same 1599 collection. Together, Wachet Auf and Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern have been called The King and Queen of Chorales.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1780) used the Morning Star chorale as the basis of his cantata, Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (BWV 1) and individual verses of the text in several other cantatas. Bach also used the tune as the basis for several organ preludes. Other composers to have used the tune in their works include Johann Pachelbel, Dieterich Buxtehude, Max Reger, Hugo Distler, and Howard Hanson.

In this arrangement, both Bach's harmonization and original harmonies are employed, as well as original material for the introduction, interlude/modulation, and ending.

Composed by Philipp Nicolai. Arranged by Paul Thurmond. Christian,Christmas,Sacred. Score. 3 pages. Paul Thurmond #4969081. Published by Paul Thurmond (A0.828258).

Tune: WACHET AUF

Use: Prelude, Offertory, Communion

In 1599, Philipp Nicolai published a hymn based on Matthew 25, the parable of the ten virgins:

Wake, awake, for night is flying;
The watchmen on the heights are crying:
Awake, Jerusalem, at last!
Midnight hears the welcome voices
And at the thrilling cry rejoices;
Come forth, ye virgins, night is past.
The Bridegroom comes, awake;
Your lamps with gladness take;
Alleluia! And for His marriage feast prepare
For ye must go and meet Him there.

Christ was speaking of his second coming, but now this hymn is used during Advent, to refer to his first coming.

SKU: A0.1097306

Composed by Peter Cornelius/Philipp Nicolai. Arranged by William J. Bullock. 19th Century,A Cappella,Christmas,Holiday,Spiritual. Octavo. 7 pages. Sigma Squared Music #701255. Published by Sigma Squared Music (A0.1097306).

This famous song is from the cycle Weihnachtslieder (“Christmas Songsâ€) by the deeply spiritual German composer Peter Cornelius. Composed in 1856 and revised in 1859 and 1870, the cycle is one of the composer’s most popular works. The perspicuity and clarity of its music and verse (Cornelius wrote both) reflect the composer’s engaging and candid temperament. The poetic message of the angular vocal line is cleverly bolstered by the subliminal message of the smoothly flowing accompanying chorale, How Brightly Shines the Morning Star by Philipp Nicolai (1556–1608). Originally scored for piano, the chorale is sung in this arrangement by a four-part mixed chorus.
