The “Goyescas� are reflection on paintings by Francisco Goya. They were written between 1909 and 1911. They we subtitled “Los majos enamorados� (The Gallants in Love). The original piano pieces are extremely difficult.

Juaquín Turina, a Spanish composer, was contemporary with the impressionistic movement. He became acquainted with Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, and his harmonic palette reflects that influence. Paseo notorno (Evening stroll) is a wonderful example of his music.

Did somebody say Piccolo Feature? Niccolo Paganini’s masterpiece Perpetuo Mobile for violin and piano
 was first introduced to the flute world by James Galway, who included a solo version with orchestra 
on his Man With the Golden Flute recording in 1976. Even though this performance was a masterful 
tour de force, he was forced to multitrack the solo line as it never stops for air. This arrangement
 features two Piccolos dividing up the solo part (problem solved!) along with C Flute and Alto Flute
 providing accompaniment, and stepping in on the melody from time to time. I have also extended 
some of the musical sequences in the most dramatic parts, making the work even more exciting. 
All the parts require the ability to double tongue, and maybe a bit of bravery as well - you might
 want to pass out seat belts and helmets for this wild ride from the greatest violin
 virtuoso to have ever lived.

It’s a brave musician who, armed only with a piccolo, is willing to walk onto a stage strewn with the assorted weaponry of a determined percussionist. One’s confidence can be shaken to the point of asking, who is the soloist here, anyway?

But the rewards for courage are great: where else will you find bongos, a harpsichord and a piccolo performing together? How many times do you come across a military march in 3/4 time? In what other circumstances would Goldilocks intrude on the Seven Dwarves? What more could you ask?

Percussion required (one player): marimba, glockenspiel, field drum, bongos, suspended cymbal with yarn sticks, sleigh bells, maracas (1 or 2, one hand).

Piccolos required: one (1).

The score assumes a five-octave double-manual harpsichord, but adjustments can be made to accommodate a single without appreciable harm to the music.
