The Four Seasons is very well known, but less well known is that Vivaldi used four sonnets (allegedly written by himself) as a descriptive basis for each concerto. Each movement follows the narrative of the sonnet, and in this arrangement I focused particularly on the way Vivaldi tells the story of the sonnet through the music. I have spent a long time carefully adapting this violin concerto for a recorder ensemble, and have provided ossias to cater for the less experienced player. This should be accessible to any amateur recorder ensemble who is looking for a challenge.

The contrabass recorder part is optional since it mostly doubles the bass 3 part.Kyrie Eleison is the opening of Bach's glorious B minor mass, and is about 10 minutes worth of rich and chromatic harmony. The use of counterpoint in this movement is stunning, and Bach cleverly repeats the theme over and over in different voices and in different contexts. This is a beautiful baroque piece suitable for any early intermediate recorder ensemble. It was written originally for a choir and a small orchestra, but it works beautifully for the recorder - have a listen!

Bach's Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern was originally written for the organ, but I have expanded it out and adapted it for a recorder ensemble (SAATB+Cb) with an optional contrabass recorder. Organ music works really well for the recorder, since organ pipes are essentially the same instrument - but the recorder can be more expressive with it's use of air. Have a listen to what it sounds like!This work is tricky, but is accessible enough for advanced school ensembles or experienced amateur ensembles who enjoy playing beautiful baroque music.

This works brilliantly for recorders (listen above!) and is suitable for an intermediate recorder quartet or ensemble looking for something to get stuck into. I have left all original repeats in the sheet music, but decided to leave them out of the MP3 recording.I have adjusted the key to C major, which works much better for SATB recorders and have been creative in moving around octaves and inner voicings to fit the narrow range of the recorder - while still keeping the integrity of the piece of music.

It is roughly 4-5 minutes long, and is suitable for experienced amateur recorder ensembles and advanced school ensembles. If you don't have a contrabass recorder to hand, you could omit the bass part and play the contrabass part on a bass recorder instead. Alternatively you could play everything two instruments higher: two sopraninos, descant, alto, tenor and bass. It is a lively and quick piece so it could work well on smaller recorders! .
