Arnage is a commission, a 1991 Commande d'Etat from the French government. The work is named after the town in which it was premiered. The first movement is slow and atmospheric with the solo trombone weaving in and out of the accompaniment. Despite a short interlude where the tempo picks up followed by a cadenza, the piece returns to the original quiet and atmospheric nature of the beginning. The second movement is vigorous and dynamic. The animated trombone is punctuated by rhythmic comments from the ensemble. The work winds down to a quiet passage before being taken back by the vigorous ensemble. This continues to the wild coda to the end. The duration is 12 minutes. This is a manuscript score, thus the reduced price.The Premiere was by Pascal Renou, trombone, with the Harmonie Municipal d’Arnage conducted by Francis Rouillard in Arnage, France on June 12, 1992.

Through a combination of guided improvisation and fully composed sections, the four flutists create textures that evoke the dreamworld experienced by the protagonist of the opera. The wind picks up around me, rousing me from sleep, and I open my eyes, but I do not move, only breathe. I am lying on my side in a field of long grass, the brush­like ends of which nudge me softly in rhythm with the moving air, encouraging me to get up. Something ­- the floral scent in the air, the chattering of insects around me ­ seems familiar about this place, though I am not entirely sure where I am.I begin to sit up slowly, first propping myself up on my elbows, taking in my surroundings. The piece picks back up at Rehearsal D with another rousing statement of the first theme, and propels itself to a thrilling close with a restatement of the introduction.      Have fun! They contrast each other, but play the same melody line, albeit simultaneously upon its recapitulation. The bass line picks up the melody, creating a dark tone, competing against the sighing oboes and strings. The hunting horns are silent, waiting to burst out after a climactic final dominant chord. The continuo used is the Neue Bach Ausgabe realization.

If the cowbell player is good at hamming it up (and rocking out!), you could try the following staging suggestions: Cowbell player plays with intensity and lots of movement, and starts moving in measure 17 toward the front of the band, ending up next to the conductor in measure 24, bowing to the audience on beat 4. Conductor gives a stern look and gestures to student to get back in the percussion section (possibilities: slit throat gesture with side of first finger followed by pointing forcefully to the back, or similar gestures). Student slinks back, starts playing cowbell again, but quietly this time. Playing gradually picks up intensity, and player starts again toward the front in measure 41, reaching the front by measure 48. In measure 48, either A) Conductor waves hands violently for student to stop, or B) have a couple of students place a large blanket over the cowbell player. This works, but only for one measure (player quits and doesn't move in bar 49). Cowbell player resumes playing with a vengeance in measure 50 (either in spite of the teacher or under the blanket!).
