Brass Neck The tuba is featured prominently in ths piece. The repeated motif drives the rhythm forward: 'Cry the tears for the freezing years. Just walk away' ... as the other players finally do. Marked Andantino and in Bb major the central section changes to Bb minor, where the horn and trombone carry the melody. This is then taken up be the second trumpet and the players stand as the music modulates back to Bb major. As each player finishes they sit down until the tuba is left to finish alone. Autumn Breeze A sultry September evening and a gentle breeze fans the last of the fading flowers. The family are gathered informally, and the music begins.... Marked Andante and with flowing descending quavers, the opening has interest for every player. The horn and then the trombone pick up the central theme, and this is then embellished by the trumpets. A gentle phrase marks the ending. Bankers Notes A letter drops on the mat. A final demand and the thought of the 'green paper rotting in their clutch' assails my mind. I write notes of a differnt kind! The opening is marked Vivace and is rather punchy, but soon settles into the main theme with driving rhythms throughout. The extended ending climaxes in rising staccato semiquavers for all.

This sonata ‘Pour deux Flutes transversieres sans Basse’ is the first of a set of six published by Boivin in Paris in 1728 as Blavet’s ‘Premier Oeuvre’. They were dedicated ‘a Son Altesse Serenissime Monsieigneur LE PRINCE DE CARIGNAN Par Mr. Blavet ordinaire de la musique de S. A. S.’ on the suitably elaborate title page.The sonata is written for two equal players and has 4 movements, Adagio, Allegro, Affetuoso & Allegro assai. Players of Intermediate ability and above will enjoy the interplay between the parts. The sonatas were printed using the soprano G clef which places the G on the bottom line of the treble staff, a practice which was not uncommon at the time. Blavet was not only the best flautist in France but also an extremely good bassoon player so would have found this clef easier to read from as he was not a keyboard player. This edition has been transcribed to the now established treble clef with G on the second line. Trills shown in the original as + are shown in this edition as tr. The breath marks in bar/measures 36, 39 & 41 in the final movement are Blavet’s. This is the first instance of his practice of marking the breaths which he developed in his opus 2 set of sonatas for flute and which has proved so useful to today’s performers of music of this period. Curiously Blavet used a flat (b) to cancel a sharp instead of a natural.

All the variations are progressive so I guarantee they get harder and will be useful to players at all levels and styles.There are two essential books that just about every trumpet player has studied; Arban’s Conservatory Method and Clarke’s Technical Studies. The Arban is fondly referred to as the trumpet player’s bible. If that is the case, then the Clarke should be the new testament. I consider Herbert L. Clarke to be the George Washington of trumpet, as he was the one of the first Americans to achieve greatness as a performer on the cornet. He was also one of the first notable pedagogues and taught such greats as Rafael Mendez and Claude Gordon, who was my teacher. I am fond of telling my students that they are the great-grandchildren of H. L. Clarke, one of our country’s first great virtuosos.The impetus for this set of variations is based on the idea of an Expanding Scale or Expanding Range. Each set will start with a small range of notes covering an interval such as a 5th and will expand over the course of the study to the whole range of the trumpet. The idea is to imagine you are holding one note and let your fingers do the rest. This concept is, of course, metaphorical but if employed will greatly enhance your technique and efficiency.This is a progressive course, so it is recommended that you practice the studies in the order they are presented. Make note of the intervals in each study. Study 1 is all chromatic, so it is easier to transition from one note to another. The second group is based on Clarke Study 5 and is all diatonic. The third group is based on Clarke Study 2 which is diatonic with some thirds. The fourth group is based on Clarke Study 3 which is arpeggios. So with each group the intervals get a little more challenging. I’ve also included more chromatic work based on Studies 7 & 8.

Kopprasch also wrote another set of etudes in a similar style - Op. 5 for High Horn.  These lesser known studies were written for 'high horn' which meant, in the 1830s, specialized players and instruments.  Most modern horn players will find these studies too high for everyday use.  This carefully edited arrangement takes all of the 60 studies down a 4th.  This puts them in the same range as the popular Op. 6 Low Horn studies and makes them accessible to all level of horn player.  If you have enjoyed working on Kopprasch, you'll enjoy this addition to your library.

Here is the first of what I hope to be many, many duets made possible by my Just Friends video series. In this series I am inviting one of my musician friends over to make music, do an interview and maybe follow it all up with a Q and A session. I wrote this duet for one of those videos and we had a good time recording it. I enjoy writing music for the people I work with. Does trumpet and trombone seem like an odd duet to write? Well, you may not believe this, but sometimes trumpet players have trombone player friends. :-) Thus, the purpose of the duet. Trumpet Pro Skill Level The highest note in the trumpet part is B natural. The rhythms are also just a little complicated. That’s why we put this at the Trumpet Pro level. We recorded it the same day when I wrote it, so it’s not like I was working on this for days. But there was a little bit of awkwardness in the trumpet part. Practice Recommendations My number one suggestion for practicing this piece is to learn the rhythms first. Notice the anticipation of the third beat. This happens in almost every measure. This rhythm grew on me during my trip to South Africa in 2016 when I performed with the Afrika Mkhize big band. There were lots of songs at the jazz festival in Grahamstown that had that twelve-eight groove with the anticipated third beat. I am NOT saying that this composition is South African. I would not presume to know how to write that kind of music. What I am saying is that the music in South Africa has influenced my writing. In much the same way as playing in all those salsa bands in the 90’s did. So, recognize that the rhythms in this composition are very important and learn those first. The rest of it should fall into place after that. About the Trumpet Pro Skill Level The Trumpet Pro skill level is the fifth skill level in our system.
