This arrangement for brass quintet, is based on a tune that is often used for the lyrics, written by the German composer, Conrad Kocher, in 1836. The melody was modified by William Chatterton Dix in 1859, for a hymn titled As With Gladness Men Of Old, hence the tune is often identified in hymnals as DIX. Though there are several other hymn tunes that can be used with the text, this arrangement also uses a modern setting by Donnalynn Grunewald (2013) in triple meter. Folliott S. Pierpoint was an English teacher and poet. The words to For the Beauty of the Earth were written in 1864. The marriage of the text with the melody by Kocher/Dix is credited to an English organist, William H. Monk in 1861. The popularity of the hymn is due partly to the aptness of the text to Thanksgiving celebrations, thus assuring in annual performance. Not only do the words express thanks for the world in which we live, but it also includes thanks for family and friends, brother, sister, parent, child. Friends on earth and friends above. Also worthy of note is the universality of the sentiment, expressed in a way that can be embraced by people of any religion. A fast two-step rag from 1908.  The melody travels from section to section.  As a two-step rag, it is written to go fast, about 132 bpm.  This would be a good concert in the park piece as it is flashy, and fun to play and listen to.  It has wonderful parts for every instrument in the brass band.  It is a finger twister, but once the band has it under its fingers, it shines as a rag written 110 years ago and captures the ragtime feel.  It is a bit on the difficult size and will take some rehearsal even for the top bands.  Once the piece is worked up, and has been polished under a fine MD, it becomes something wonderful and worth the extra effort.

It was the hit song of the 1919 Follies and became the theme song. It was also used frequently in Miss America pageants prior to 1955. The top four voices take turns with the melody while the tuba sets a foundation with chromatic passing tones that should be given a little emphasis as they occur. Away in a Manger The first two verses are sometimes attributed to Martin Luther as “Cradle Hymn�, but definitive proof of Luther's authorship is missing. The most common version is based on words found in a Philadelphia Sunday School book by James Murray in 1885 titled “Luther's Cradle Song�. Silent Night Franz Gruber was an Austrian church organist at St Nicholas parish in Obernhof, a small town north of Salzburg. The priest at the church, Joseph Mohr wrote the poem Stille Nacht in 1816 and Gruber composed the music for guitar accompaniment for a Christmas eve service in 1818 because something, possibly a flood, had damaged the organ. So, rather than a keyboard composition, this was originally composed for guitar and voice. The composition was preserved by the man who fixed the organ and shared it with other churches as he traveled. Luckily a copy survived so that Mohr and Gruber could both be acknowledged for their creation.
