The Black Hounds are a nocturnal apparition, and their appearance was regarded as a portent of death. They are supposed to hunt on specific nights in the autumn and winter when it is believed that the howling of these huge dogs foretold death to anyone who heard them. *************************************************About the Composer Laura Olson (ASCAP) is a retired California music educator with over 30 years of experience specializing in stringed instruments and orchestras. She holds a B.A. in Music Education and M.A. in Irish Traditional Music Performance (fiddle, flute, and harp). This album follows the simple story of A Squirrel Named Whiskers. Whiskers is a curious but cautious little squirrel that lives in the woods and enjoys exploring new areas of the woods from time to time when he finishes collecting food for the day. This story follows Whiskers as he ventures out into an unknown part of the woods and happens to stumble across an old abandoned house which is surrounded by trees and bushes. There is no one to be seen or heard here and Whiskers cant help but explore inside.I began writing this album with the track And Carefully Crept Inside. but I actually wasnt planning on writing a full album at that point. I go into more detail in the individual tracks program note about it but it was the spark that led me to commit to writing a full album. I began composing other tracks for the music box to be part of the album and then I had an idea to make the titles into a story, but what would they be about? The music box is an enchanting and mysterious little instrument and is often associated with magic, fairies, and the forest which is what led me to decide to write the story about a Squirrel.I took some time to write out a short story and then created 10 titles that would fit the story. I continued to write the remaining tracks of the album now using the titles as inspiration to write the music which made it easy to create a certain mood and style. Writing this album was a great exercise in writing music that has a story behind it which something I always try to do when composing. I believe that every piece of music has a story behind it intentionally or unintentionally. I plan to continue to infuse a story in the music I write as it gives it much more meaning than a piece of music being written without a story in mind. I hope you enjoy listening to or practicing these pieces and have fun following along with whiskers on his journey into the unknown.

This piece depicts the story of the Penitent Thief, one of the two other men who hung on a cross beside Jesus, as told in the Bible: One of the thieves who were hanged by Jesus was hurling abuse at him, saying, 'Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!' But the other answered, and rebuking him, said, 'Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? We indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.' And he was saying, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom!' And Jesus said to him, 'Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.' (Luke 23:39-43) I initially set out to portray the scene from a narrative perspective. As I began composing and felt the story resonate more and more with my own spiritual experiences, I decided to shift the focus onto what I imagined the emotional and spiritual experiences of the Penitent Thief were during this brief but transformative interaction with Jesus right before death. While the passage does not describe his internal experience, I imagine that Jesus’ extension of kindness and mercy, along with the promise “Today you will be with me in Paradise,” profoundly impacted him. In composing this, I hoped to convey that transformative encounter. Ultimately, The Penitent Thief depicts an experience familiar to many Christians: that of a lost and broken soul discovering Jesus offers the truth and salvation they long for. To capture the element of dialog, I envisioned the Viola as the Penitent Thief and the Piano as Jesus. Each has a distinct theme/motif. On the cross, the Penitent Thief is consumed by shame, sorrow, and fear of death. His demeanor shifts between moments of quiet contemplation and visceral emotional outbursts. Facing imminent death, he yearns for redemption and truth. He looks at Jesus hanging next to him, blameless and holy. He feels admiration and praise and is overcome by penitence and humility. He calls out, half in desperation, half in worship: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom…” Jesus, moved by his penitence and belief, responds with kindness and mercy, extending salvation: Today you will be with me in Paradise.” The Penitent Thief imagines Paradise and hopes for this to hold true. His hope becomes briefly overshadowed by lingering doubt and fear. Silence falls. Then, as the hour of death arrives, the man reaches out again and clings to Jesus’ promise, this time with more desperation. His soul suddenly becomes filled with joy, finding the fulfillment of longing, bound with Christ, and knowing that he will soon be at rest in Paradise. At peace, the man gazes upward, gives his final sputtering breath, and his soul departs this world.

Jaeger, who was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as a mighty hunter before the Lord, Jger being German for hunter. In 1904 Elgar told Dora Penny (Dorabella) that this variation is not really a portrait, but the story of something that happened. Once, when Elgar had been very depressed and was about to give it all up and write no more music, Jaeger had visited him and encouraged him to continue composing. He referred to Ludwig van Beethoven, who had a lot of worries, but wrote more and more beautiful music. And that is what you must do, Jaeger said, and he sang the theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 Pathtique. Elgar disclosed to Dora that the opening bars of Nimrod were made to suggest that theme. Can't you hear it at the beginning? Only a hint, not a quotation. This variation has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at British funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions. It is always played at the Cenotaph, Whitehall in London at the National Service of Remembrance. A version was also played during the Hong Kong handover ceremony in 1997 and at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Nimrod variation was the final orchestral composition (before the national anthem) played by the Greek National Orchestra in a televised June 2013 concert, before the 75-year-old Athenian ensemble was dissolved in the wake of severe government cutbacks. An adaptation of the piece appears at the ending of the 2017 film Dunkirk in the score by Hans Zimmer. This arrangement for Flex-Band has been adapted to suit the instrumentalists. The key has changed and this makes it much more playable and more secure.

Perform this original work of Celtic Irish setting from her CD (Gypsy Road,2012) scored for harp ensemble of intermediate to advanced players.  Scored in E minor with no lever changes it features a creative slip-jig with lush and effective harmonies.  A rare opportunity to showcase programmatic skills for the harp ensemble.   The dark and mysterious musical message will touch the hearts of all who hear it.About the CompositionI wrote this when I was very angry at the world.  Someday I might meet a black hound on a dark night... and we’ll both go hunting together.Black Dogs,  Black Hounds, The Hounds of Hell,  Dogs of Hell,  Gabriel Hounds, Yell Hounds,  Barghest,  Black Dog of the Hanging Hills, Gurt Dog or the Hounds of Herne the Hunter… by whatever name, they are a common feature in the folklore of the British Isles.  The Black Hounds of Cŵn Annwn are the spectral hounds of Annwn, the otherworld of Welsh myth.  Early Christians came to dub these mythical creatures as The Hounds of Hell or Dogs of Hell and erroneously theorized they were therefore owned by Satan.  However, the Annwn of medieval Welsh tradition is an otherworldly paradise and not a hell or abode of dead souls. The Black Hounds are a nocturnal apparition, and their appearance was regarded as a portent of death. They are supposed to hunt on specific nights in the autumn and winter when it is believed that the howling of these huge dogs foretold death to anyone who heard them. *************************************************About the Composer Laura Olson (ASCAP) is a retired California music educator with over 30 years of experience specializing in stringed instruments and orchestras. She holds a B.A. in Music Education and M.A. in Irish Traditional Music Performance (fiddle, flute, and harp). Her experience as a symphonic musician, ethnic musician, and Film/TV composer led her to combining the three aspects of music into her own compositions and arrangements; storybook music in cinematic style. She is the owner of her recording and publishing label Blue Steer Studios(ASCAP) which allows her to combine her composing skills with knowledge of both the business and publishing aspects of music industry. Winner of a Silver Ace Award from the Las Vegas Film Festival she has composed music for all types of media, including Film/TV, web and advertising, and her own personal music in audio CD and sheet music. In 2021 she took time off from composing to relocate her studio to Eastern Washington (Spokane) and is now getting started on new projects and pursuing music composition full time. Son approche a captivé le directeur du Centre culturel américain (alors situé dans le quartier de Saint-Germain à Paris), qui lui a offert l'opportunité de se produire devant un public. He explored the traditional musical heritage of the African continent, notably through the thumb piano sanza, and the polyphonic music of the Central African pygmies, or singing in his native language and composing humoristic songs in French!Success followed. Francis Bebey traveled the world: from France to Brazil, Cameroon to Sweden, Germany to the Carribean, or Morocco to Japan... the list of countries where he was invited to perform, gives lectures, or meets readers is very long. In addition to public recognition, he enjoyed the recognition of his fellow musicians, such as guitarist John Williams or Venezuelan Antonio Lauro, who invited him to be a part of the jury for a classical guitar competition in Caracas.His life was the journey of an African pioneer, a man rooted in his cultural heritage and carrying a message of sharing and hope for the world.
