Instrumentation: 2222-2211-timp-perc-hp-pf-strings. Program note. SYMPHONY No.1, subtitled Fallen Angels and commissioned by Bruce Hangen and the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, is in three movements - I. Prince of Darkness II. Waltz!!!III. Lilith's Lament. The first movement begins in a dark, underground world, the world of the Prince of Darkness. Melodies emerge, growing, evolving gradually ... transforming ... finally, explosively ... into a syncopated danse macabre. The movement ends, agitatedly, in a quasi-scherzo fashion, scurrying from the lower depths of the orchestra to a heavenly cadence in C major. The second movement is a dance for the Prince and Lilith. [In talmudic lore, Lilith was regarded as a devilish being, and as Adam's first wife.] Each segment of this movement begins at first cautiously, and then very quickly reaches an ecstatic outburst of shouts and exclamations. A middle trio section offers a contrast of lyric introspection and contemplation. The third and last movement is rather sad and melancholy. Ironically, it is again in C major. The solo flute coupled with two bassoons is the main feature, with a Gil Evans-like wind choir floating in and out ... The work is dedicated to Miles, the original Prince of Darkness.

Far to the westernmost regions of Russia, and then farther still, there is a place known as the
Dancing Forest of Kaliningrad. It is a mysterious, otherworldly place where trees grow in tangles,
knots, and other unfathomable shapes, a place described by local psychics as a point of conflict where great positive and negative forces collide. Due to its remarkable air of mystery, the forest has woven its way into the legends and folklore of the region. My personal favorite legend about it goes as follows: The Prussian prince Barty used to hunt in these forests. Chasing a Roe deer one day, he
heard a wonderful tune, and as he came to a field, he saw a beautiful girl playing a lyre. She was a Christian and her name was Predislava. The prince proposed to her but she replied that she would marry only a man of her faith. Prince Barty agreed to become a Christian as long as she could prove the power of her invisible God was more powerful than the surrounding trees. Predislava played her lyre. Birds grew silent, and the trees started dancing. The prince then took a bracelet from his hand and gave it to her as a token of their betrothal. On this very spot, many years later, there grew the Dancing Forest.

This piece is my homage to the Dancing Forest of Kaliningrad and all its associated legends. Premiered by the Santa Teresa High School Concert Band in May 2019, the work is scored for a concert band of intermediate size and skill level and is designed to help introduce high school musicians to modal music and unconventional key signatures. Furthermore, the piece is inspired by multiple rhythmic and harmonic elements of rock and folk music in an attempt to help bridge the gap between popular music and contemporary wind ensemble repertoire. King William's March  was composed in honor of William of Orange who had become King of England following the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Clarke's better known Prince of Denmark's March which follows, honored William's brother-in-law Prince George of Denmark.

Trumpet Voluntary - The most celebrated trumpet voluntary is the Prince of Denmark's March, a composition by Jeremiah Clarke written circa. 1700. It is properly a rondo for keyboard and was not originally called a trumpet voluntary. It is very popular as wedding music and was played at the 1981 wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer. [Wikipedia]

This is a brass quintet arrangement of the iconic Prince power ballad featured in the movie Purple Rain. Trumpet has melody first time through, then the trombone. Trumpet 2 gets a shortened version of the guitar solo, then it keeps building to the end. A lot of close harmonies and parts interweaving to create the effect of guitars and keyboards. A really cool closer to your Prince set! Difficulty is medium advanced due to trumpet and trombone range and importance of good time!

This is a brass quintet version of Prince's hit Kiss. The arrangement is a combination of the album version of the tune ( which was very straight and witty) and the live version (which had a horn section and was a lot funkier). We've classified this as advanced in difficulty due to a couple high notes in the first trumpet, french horn, and trombone--along with the need for everyone to have really solid time. Trumpets and trombone get most of the melody on this one. This will be a great opener to your Prince set (Zack's arrangements of Little Red Corvette, Purple Rain, Delirious, Raspberry Beret, 1999 and When Doves Cry are all available on this site).
