This, the trombone octet adaptation of my trombone quartet arrangement of Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique, again features all the well-known themes of the full orchestral symphony. The beginning is identical with the original, but then proceeds immediately to the March to the Scaffold of the fourth movement. The famous idée fixe of the symphony is first heard at measure 72, and this is followed by other themes from the first movement. The adagio at measure 164 re-creates the pastoral duet of the symphony’s third movement. As indicated on the charts, the first trombone (alto) should play this section offstage (as for the oboist in the original), while the others remain on stage. If this is not possible, then the first trombone should play this section muted. This very reflective interlude is followed by my personal favorite, the wondrously jolly waltz from the symphony’s second movement. The Witches’ Round Dance, a sort of fugue, comes next, and leads to the dies irae – played in four octaves here, but in this octet version heard together with the Witches’ Round Dance. The idée fixe is stated once again before the arrangement concludes in the same way as the original symphony.This is a light-hearted arrangement that is not intended to re-create exactly the grandeur of the original with its huge orchestral forces. Lasting nearly 9 min, depending on how fast you take some sections, this piece will require some stamina, but with many sections arranged for two, three or four trombones, every player does get a break. The first part requires a very capable alto trombonist with a good high register.Player 1 plays alto throughout, player 2 switches between alto and tenor, and parts 7 and 8 are for bass trombone.Sensible page turns were impossible to incorporate in some of the parts while at the same time not exceeding four pages. So in those parts the players are instructed – during longer breaks – to fetch the next page in good time, which is easily possible if the parts are printed out on separate sheets. Players using tablets won’t have any problems, of course.

Players of intermediate level and above will have no problems creating a sensitive and convincing performance.   The PDF is 8 pages in length (portrait A4) and includes a full score and parts for two Altos, Tenor and Baritone Saxophone.   The duration of the Prelude is just under 2 minutes.

In its broader sense, nada que ver is just that: there is nothing to see (this is what the police usually say when they want you not to stop). But as an idiom, nada que ver implies what you are saying is absolutely unrelated and therefore you are totally wrong.  Why is this waltz mercenary? Because it is very direct, traditional and does not intend to experiment with anything. In addition to the original version (for solo piano) the composer has made one for violin and piano (which can be played without major problems with flute, or with clarinet with slight adaptations). The piece was inspired by some rock climbing exploits which required great planning and coordination to accomplish. Performance Advice: The performer should be creative with the problems faced in this piece. It is up to the performer to decide which hand is designated for the keyboard (occasionally both hands will be required). Most of the hi-hat notes should be played by a foot. Published by Erik Cole (A0.996128). This is a transcription of the complete Pictures at an Exhibition for double reed choir. It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. This is another movement where the frequent unisons and sustained long notes led to some pitch/distortion problems in the MP3. My apologies for that.

Published by Arturo Escorza (A0.1121857). Fuego, fuego - Villancico para San Pedro Nolasco á 7 - Antonio Duran de la Mota. This beautiful villancico with text by Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz and music by Antonio Duran de la Mota, made famous by Ensemble Elyma, was adapted to different texts during the 18th century. Ensemble Elyma recorded it as Fuego, fuego, que el templo se abrasa. This pretty much the same villancico, but some differences, both musical and with the text. The text says Fuego, fuego, que Juan de Dios se abrasa. The other lyrics can be adapted without problems. The original sheet music is in F Major, although the tenor's vocal range is too high to sing comfortably (remember that, in early music, the tessituras are not necessarily identical to what we now understand as alto, tenor, etc. It is likely that the tenor was sung by a female voice). Anyway, in this file is also included the piece transposed a minor third below, that is, in D Major.
