Merengue de Merlín is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Trumpet and one Trombone.This duet is based on the traditional Latin style of Merengue that emerged in the Dominican Republic during the Nineteenth Century. Merengue Tipico bands maintain the traditional instrumentation of the double-headed tambora drum, güira, accordion and vocal, while urban bands in the North American diaspora often add saxophone, bass and other percussion. The Merengue dance became hugely popular in the 1950s and new forms continue to draw audiences around the world.If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The steady quintilla tambora rhythm is present throughout, and following the precise articulation in the score will help convey the style. The main challenge is the fast tempo and melodies should be clearly articulated. Merengue de Merlín has a performance time of around two and a half minutes at full tempo. This work is derived from three folk songs: Cirandeiro from Brazil, Mi Caballo Blanco (My White Horse) from Chile, and Wsak Nam Tak Nebude (Fear Not, O Sweetest One) from the Czech Republic. These themes freely interplay with each other melodically and modally - often over a seven-beat rhythmic pattern found in many African and Native American songs. Eventually these all meld into a single common-time unit in C major. This composition was intended to reflect the rich and diverse cultures represented everywhere, using melodies specifically associated with children, and how these all converge into the single global community of tomorrow through what will be the leaders of tomorrow.Nchikota Omenala was composed for the University of Dubuque Wind Ensemble in Dubuque, Iowa.

Haitian voodoo rhythms, and gods Damballa Wedo, Papa Legba, Ezulie, Baron Zamdi the Gede are brought to the orchestral concert stage in this second symphony of American composer James Nathaniel Holland, who served for a while in Haiti in the US Peace Corps in the 1990s. The symphony for large orchestra is divided into three movements. It begins with a rousing invocation which melts into a sensitive section, sympathetic of the human condition and of the Republic of the Caribbean island of Haiti. The second movement, actually three sections, is very a very African sounding fugue that changes into a contraposition of the quiet, mysterious Minwet and the European French Minuet, and ends with an almost church joyous, dance of complex percussion, call and response. The last movement incorporates multimedia of the beauty of spoken Kreyol language: stating that we, ourselves, are the gods expressed in the Haitian folk dances. Program notes: Mark Ludwig came to me in the spring of 1997 wondering if I would be interested in writing a piece of music for the Hawthorne String Quartet that would bring to the attention of the world what many Tibetans are experiencing as exiles or political prisoners under the rule of the Peoples Republic of China. I told him I would be. So, he loaned me several books on Tibet, the Dalai Lamas, a video about a Tibetan ethnomusicologist who is currently in prison for spying, and a few recordings of Tibetan folk music. I found the material very intriguing and fascinating. And toward the end of a five-week residency at the American Academy in Rome that summer, I completed the first draft of Tantric Psalms. The work was completed a week later at home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1999, I revisited the score and added a voice so that the beautiful Tibetan chants and prayers can be invoked.
