A Mighty Fortress is Our God ♫ piano solo arrangement by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ Martin Luther wrote Ein Feste Burg sometime between 1527 and 1529. (Luther published the Ninety-five Theses in 1517 and was excommunicated in 1521.) Ein Feste Burg was translated into English by Miles Coverdale in 1539 with the title, Oure God is a defence and towre. The English text most familiar to me was translated by Francis Hedge in 1853. ♫ Luther believed in the power of music. In 1558 in the Forward to Georg Rhau's Symphoniae he wrote “I truly desire that all Christians would love and regard as worthy the lovely gift of music, which is a precious, worthy, and costly treasure given to mankind by God. … next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. It controls our thoughts, minds, hearts, and spirits.... Our dear fathers and prophets did not desire without reason that music be always used in the churches. Hence, we have so many songs and psalms. This precious gift has been given to man alone that he might thereby remind himself that God has created man for the express purpose of praising and extolling God.†♫ In his lifetime, Luther made 3 major contributions to the Church: the doctrine of salvation by faith alone, the belief that Scripture should be translated into the people's language (producing a translation of the Bible into German), and the birth of congregational singing. In Roman Catholic churches of his day, only the cantor and a chorus sang the mass in Latin. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. These are all questions which Wir bauen eine Stadt answers in a playful and child-oriented mode. COMMENTARY Since 1926, Hindemith had been pursuing the objective of attracting children and amateur musicians to contemporary music through the composition of especially suitable musical works. In 1927, his musical-educational ambitions led among other projects to the involvement of the youth music movement in his plans for the Baden- Baden chamber music festival in which he was deeply involved in his capacity as member of the programme committee. Neue Musik Berlin 1930, a supplementary event following the Baden-Baden music festival, was to be devoted not only to radio plays, amateur choirs and electric music, but also to the field of ‘plays and songs for children’. The play for children Wir bauen eine Stadt was created in collaboration with the Berlin author Robert Seitz who provided the text and was premièred on 21 June 1930 by children aged between eight and twelve years old providing the final work in the concert Neue Musik Berlin 1930. The work swiftly achieved widespread dissemination and was available in a number of different languages within two years of its completion. Hindemith explained his pedagogical concept behind Wir bauen eine Stadt in a preface to the score as follows: ‘A play for children: this means that this work was more intended as a lesson and exercise for children themselves rather than for the entertainment of adult audiences. The form of the work can be altered according to the appropriate needs of the group of children involved: songs can be omitted and other musical pieces, dances or scenes inserted. The music can additionally be livened up by tambourines, drums and other easily playable percussion. In other words, these pieces are perfect to have in your repertoire when you need something to pull out at the last minute. Prelude - Soldier's Fanfare is an energetic organ fanfare made up of triads, scales, and arpeggios in very basic form. Pedaling is mostly on the chord root and usually changes just once per bar, and there is no pedaling at all during the middle Swell section. 2 pages, 1:30 minutes Offertory - Music Box Minuet is a delightful Organ Solo for manuals/hands (no pedal part). Both hands are in the Treble Clef. The RH has the melody of mostly quarter notes (crotchets) played on a Flute stop. The LH has mostly 2 note chords, one chord per bar, played on Strings. The A Theme is in 4/4 and the B Theme in 3/4. Each Theme is repeated. 1 page, 1 minute Postlude - Classical Euphoria is an Organ Solo of pure fun. Euphoria--a temporary feeling of excessive happiness and intense joy. That certainly describes this piece of music. This piece puts a smile on my face every time. And it is definitely classical. It is in the Key of C with broken triads and is in Rounded Binary form. The B theme is minor but still happy and energetic. The complete song is Intro-AABBAA-Coda.
