The first movement, entitled Life, is quick, spritely, and very traditional musically, and symbolizes the carefree phoenix soaring in the sky, living a life of bliss. The second movement, entitled Immolation, is much slower and very dreary, creating a feeling of nothingness to symbolize the extinguished life of a burnt-up phoenix. The third movement, entitled Rejuvenation, is faster paced and very rhythmically intricate. It is also the pizzicato movement of the work, and symbolizes the phoenix's ashes working to revive themselves. The final movement, entitled Rebirth, takes concepts from the first movement of the piece, reworking them into something entirely new for a grand finish.

Published by Anthony Bannach Music (A0.995180). My first string quartet draws a lot of inspiration from early 20th century composers, which perhaps might be my favorite era of classical music. I am oft inspired by the music from Stravinsky, Nielsen, and Debussy, among others. However, the composer to have the most influence on me for the past few years is Bartok, and I believe it is evident in this work as well. I loved Bartok's use of the tritone as a tonal center, the vast and frequent changes of tempo, and the multitude of textural colors and extended techniques in his works. Most of the extended techniques are found in the second movement, an example of which is the Bartok pizzacatto, which today is a commonly found and utilized articulation. But I also have some newer techniques such as aleotoric passages, originally created by composers such as Charles Ives and Henry Crowell and which saw more prominent usage through the likes of John Cage and Witold LutosÅ‚awski, are still quite new and fresh compositional tools. The third movement is much more song-like and tonal in nature than the first two movements, but really adapts Bartok's style of changing the tempo often to bridge different sections. Ultimately, I see the quartet as a microcosm of the music I want to continue writing in the future, not over-indulging in the intellectual exercises of mid-to-late 20th and 21st century classical music, while at the same time not relying on the tonal and emotional tropes of the past. .

The first movement, being present, immediately leads to an atmosphere of high emotional tension. The prevailing atmospheric elements of the music are dramatic and passionate, alternating with each other like a kaleidoscope. In contrast to that, a second theme is intoned three times – an invitation, a memory of the existence of another world, a light-house which illuminates the twilight in which we live so often. But this invitation remains unheard. The first movement concludes with dissonances in the upper register – a cry of utter desperation. The second movement, so distant ... yet so near, is the calm, unhurried vocal section of the quartet. A forgiving, loving look at a world tortured by grief and contradictions. Gradually, the singing becomes more personal, more emotional and more dramatic. The rhythmic figure of a funeral march in the recapitulation of the second movement is a gesture of loss.
