A contemporary classical piece and composed for String Quartet, it uses various techniques, rhythms and repetitions recreating musically the tram and therefore has a sense of 'Programme music'. The 1st movement is light, energetic and has a youthful demeanour- this appears rhythmically simple, but second and third position violin techniques are used. The 2nd movement has more spirit and rhythms become more fluid and progressive. It also comprises of various pizzicato techniques The 3rd movement follows chromatic harmonic techniques and has an atonal sense, but quite suitable for a Beginner String Quartet or various aspiring contemporary youth groups. The whole composition also comprises of pizzicato, tremolo and staccato expression and techniques. I hope you are able to find some fun and enjoyment in playing this score.

A challenging yet accessible piano piece that is interesting and very rhythmic. Don’t let all of the meters scare you - it is easier to figure out than you’d think at first glance! The third movement - Over-Caffeinated - starts with a tri-tone, just because it sounds interesting and a bit jarring. The Right and Left hands argue for quite a while, tossing the same little angular melody back and forth, even getting stuck together at one point like two dragonflies in late summer [see measures 147 and following.] It all ends in a major blowout, complete with references to the first two movements, get big and boisterous, and then the final surprisingly pleasant C major chord is followed by the right hand, which JUST has to get in the last word. The composition is in three movements: I Cherub vs Imp II Guardian III Old Nick This new work was commissioned by his former student, Gordon Wolfe, Principal Trombonist of the Toronto Symphony. The Concertino is one of the featured works on Wolfe's beautiful new recording, REFLECTIONS. Here is what the composer says about his own work: The 'tritone' has been referred to as a dissonance for centuries, and has been called 'the devil in music'. This interval can be quite difficult to sing in tune, and can often grate on the ears, yet it can also have a great dramatic effect. It is tuly a 'devilish' little beast, and it is what inspired me. The devil's antagonist is surely an angel. So, imagine one's guardian angel on one shoulder, and 'Old Nick' on the other, battling for your conscience, and you will essentially have what this three movement piece is all about. Concertino is for very advanced performers and is about 15 minutes in length.

This is an arrangement of Mendelssohn’s overture The Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave), intended for a medium-sized saxophone orchestra.  It has been categorised as ‘advanced’, as the length and tempo of the work make it quite challenging.  However, provided the main parts are covered by competent players, those with less experience can either double, judiciously omitting any problem sections, or in some cases opt for the appropriate ‘easier’ add-on part. The Hebrides overture was inspired by this segment of Mendelssohn’s Scottish travels.  The work is an early example of a tone poem: a musical representation of the scenery, wind and weather of the Scottish Hebridean islands, reflecting their sudden and infinite changeability. After some revisions, the overture received its first performance in May 1832 and remains a favourite with audiences to this day.  It has been central in establishing – and sustaining – the popularity of Fingal’s Cave as a tourist destination. This is an adaptation of an arrangement that was originally created for a woodwind course held on another Scottish island – Skye, which is the largest and most northerly of the Inner Hebrides.
