    My sister-in-law, Anita, started me on piano lessons during a summer visit when I was 8. I restarted fresh with trumpet in beginning band at age 10.  Piano lessons with Mrs. Frances Dickey starting in middle school years really pushed my musicianship forward. Playing duets with Mrs. Dickey helped fill the gap between the fairly simple sounding pieces I needed to learn and the pieces I needed to keep me motivated to practice.

My sophomore year in at Biola University I sprained my right wrist. I was making a lot of progress with my piano teacher Miss Jennie Kuk-Ying Wong and was concerned about losing momentum. Not to worry, Miss Wong assigned me Alexander Scriàbin’s  Prélude in C# minor by for solo piano, left hand alone. Working with my left hand alone for a couple of weeks was extremely instructive. Training my left hand to play a melodic legato with the same quality as my dominant hand was challenging, but rewarding. Ever since, I have used compositions for left hand alone occasionally for practice and training. This has led me to write several piano solos for left hand alone. The pace of His Eye is on the Sparrow  is unhurried, so the pianist gets the full benefit of the exercise.

 The 3 movements of Jeremiah summarize 3 main themes of the prophet's messages: Jeremiah's unwavering warning of coming judgment, the fall of Judah in 586 BC, and the promised restoration of Israel through the New Covenant. This tone poem is written in the genre of contemporary classical music and is intended for the concert stage rather than church preludes and offertories. Dalrymple uses modal harmonies; polychords and polytonality; free dissonance; atonality, mixed meters, etc. to convey the drama of the Bible.

 Originally composed for violin and piano, it can be performed on several other instruments.

   Movement 3 is the finale of the tone poem. Alongside the warnings of God’s judgment are the promise of a brighter future for Judah. Jeremiah sees 70 years in the future when God will bring the exiles back, but actually much, much further into the future when God makes a new covenant with His people.

            This is the second movement of the tone poem Jeremiah 2 - Lonely City. It represents Jeremiah's reaction to God's judgment that we read in the book of Lamentations.

 

            We spend millions of dollars viewing horror movies every year. These films are filled with eerie music that adds inexpressibly to the emotional content of the movie. The music in Jeremiah 2 Lonely City was created to be deliberately chilling. The wrath of God is the most horror filled image I can imagine. Frankly, Jeremiah 2 Lonely City is frankly not easy to listen to. But this ‘horror’ music belongs between Movement 1 (the majesty of God vs the rebellion of jaded Judah) and Movement 3 (the joy of the New Covenant).

Piano solo arrangement of 2 hymns, Wounded for Me and My Savior's Love by Stephen R Dalrymple.

William Gilbert Jones Ovens (1870-1945) conducted seaside missions in Northern Ireland for over 30 years. Following World War I, Owens saw a wounded veteran limping past him on the street and he thought He was wounded for me. Gladys Dobson Roberts, a missionary in India, wrote 4 additional verses (Dying for me, Risen for me, Living for me, Coming for me.)

 

Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (1856 -1932) taught himself to play the family’s reed organ, growing up on a farm in Iowa. He was teaching singing school by age 16. He served as music director in Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in San Francisco for 2 years beginning in 1890. In 1912 he began working with Homer Rodeheaver’s publishing company. He edited 43 song books, 7 men’s chorus books, 19 anthem collections and 23 cantatas. He wrote the lyrics for 63 hymns and the tunes for 218 hymns.

 

I used to like to tease the pastor of the Nazarene Church we were attending at that time whenever he chose this song. Responding to the lyrics I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene, I would remind him that Jesus wasn’t a Nazarene; He is THE Nazarene.
