As a life-long fan of the music of Brahms, I have wished there were more than his four symphonies to enjoy.  So I set about orchestrating his sonata for piano, opus 5, as a symphony.  I doing so, I've seen many things in his piano music, that suggest he was thinking orchestrally.  And this was a composition from his youth (1854).  Perhaps, if he weren't so overwhelmed by the genius of Beethoven, who came before, he might have made this his first symphony.  Brahms has long been a staple of concert-going audiences, and with this piece, you can perform a new symphony of Brahms, created from his piano sonata in F-minor, orchestrated into a symphony.

Dort versammelten sich im November 2000 die Mitglieder der Europäischen Trompetergilde (European Trumpet Guild). Bertold Hummel wurde gebeten, ein Stück für diesen Anlass zu komponieren. Der Komponist verwendet darin sechs Trompeten von der Basstrompete bis zur Piccolotrompete, ergänzt nur von den Pauken. Die drei Sätze sind kontrastreich; im zweiten Satz wird der Hörer mit einem Nachhall von Luthers Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott überrascht. Im letzten Satz taucht eine bekannte, moderne Melodie auf, wird verarbeitet und mündet rasch in ein dramatisches Finale. Hummel verstand es immer wieder, passgenau für einen Anlass oder einen Interpreten zu schreiben, das Publikum zu begeistern und seinem persönlichen Stil dabei stets treu zu bleiben.
