This arrangement is an accurate transcription of the Ray Anthony Orchestra recording. The 2 clarinet-2 tenor sax style is that used by The Glenn Miller Orchestra on Sunrise Serenade and other hit recordings. Original instrumental recordings of Twilight Time included those made respectively by the Three Suns[ (1944) and Les Brown & His Band of Renown (1945). Les Brown's version of Twilight Time was recorded in November 1944 and released in early 1945 as the B-side of Sentimental Journey, the first recording of that song. While the A-side featured Doris Day's vocals, Twilight Time was an instrumental. The Platters had a top 10 recording of it in 1960.

Many years ago I saw a sculpture of Anish Kapoor: in this sculpture there were two huge halved orbs hanging from two sides of the room. The halved orbs were dark purple blue, which was so dark that the end of the orbs (their inside) was not visible. They seemed, instead, like endless openings. The piece Gradual Edge is an attempt to trace, as if through touch, and follow the imaginary passage on this half orb, attempting to figure out, through touch, the transition from substance to the endless cavities inside in increasing darkness. The piece is dedicated to Christina Meißner and Poul Skjølstrup Larsen. This lovely unaccompanied Concert Etude, originally composed by Ludwig Milde for Bassoon and here transcribed for Baritone Saxophone, will make an excellent addition to any recital or concert programme. Ludwig Milde was born in Prague in 1849 and studied the bassoon at the Prague Music Academy with the then-celebrated teacher, Gross. He completed his bassoon studies in 1867 and then from 1868-1870 he studied composition and harmony with Prof. Skukersky. Between 1870-1872, Milde played principal bassoon in the Linz opera house. He then served in a number of symphony and opera orchestras throughout Bohemia and Austria, after which he returned to Prague. He became bassoon professor at the Prague Music Academy where he taught from 1886-1894. He then resigned from the Academy but remained active as a soloist and as a private teacher. He wrote several study works, of which his “Orchesterstudien für Fagott� and “Akkordzerlegung für Fagott� became famous throughout the Continent and are still much in use. They were only fully acknowledged for their educational value after the war, in 1945. Milde died in Germany in 1913.

This song starts off with a child waiting patiently in line to see Santa so he can tell him what he wishes for him to bring him for Christmas. I started off with my own original melody and lyrics and then in the middle of the song, when the child finally reaches Santa, I switch to the melody of Jolly Old Saint Nicholas. However, to modernize it, I switched to Jolly Old Dear Santa Claus. I kept verse one lyrics the same except for that part. I changed the lyrics entirely for the second verse. The child tells Santa where he can put the presents and hopes one is for him. He also tells him he tries to wait up for him each year, but Santa is so quiet, he sleeps through the night. The last verse is back to my original melody and lyrics where Santa tells him it will be a surprise what he brings him this year. This brings the song all the way from waiting in line to see Santa to sitting on his knee and Santa telling him it will be a surprise. While the lyrics of the song are rather risqué, dealing with an affair between the local lord's wife and a commoner from the town, the tune is quite lively and fun to listen to. Matty Groves is well attested to in folk song literature going back at least as far as the early 1700s if not earlier. It is most well known now because of the British folk rock group Fairport Convention. This version is arranged by Mark Lewis for Bb clarinet quartet. All four players get a turn with the melody, harmony, and accompaniment parts and the verses are separated by a short interlude with an original melody. The rhythms and fingerings are not too difficult but the melody does cover a fairly large range so it may a challenge for younger players. However, almost all intermediate and even some advanced middle school players should be able to play this fun little piece.
