Mario Totaro accepted the challenge, and the five bagatelles published in this volume are his personal «answer».Maintaining a balance between individuality and business needs can be very difficult, as it can be hard to reach a certain level of «acceptability» in this field. Difficult, but not impossible. Yet such a challenge can also be as stimulating as amusing experience. Moreover, these bagatelles prove it: despite being quite simple, they reveal a care for detail and a significant daintiness; they are indeed expressive, but they refer to the imagination of their author; finally, they are functional to their purpose without showing it, as too often happens to a certain type of «musical wallpaper» to which we are accustomed. In short, Totaro can measure out all the elements without sacrificing his compositive personality or artistic integrity, and this is definitely a goal that not all composers (sometimes even the biggest) can achieve.

The more dancelike and rhythmical part of the piece uses a 19/16 measure that allows us to experience a sense of disparity. Aldo Finzi's Due valzer lenti for piano that have been performed in a world première by Simonetta Heger in Vico Equense (near Naples) on October 2001 were written, together with the lyric Catharine and another piano piece Tempo di fox-trot, when the composer was hoping to move shortly to the United States. Unfortunately, this never happened although Finzi already had a contract with a music school in Chicago. In both waltzes a short introduction precedes the dance theme and the pleasant piano style, certainly nearer to the Pavana's noble simplicity than to the complex writing of the Toccata, vaguely suggests thoughts of George Gershwin.

This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.The Nutcracker is an 1892 two-act ballet with a score by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960's and is performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in North America. Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. Some critics have called it astonishingly rich in detailed inspiration and from beginning to end, beautiful, melodious, original and characteristic. The ballet's first complete performance outside Russia took place in England in 1934. The first complete United States performance was on December 24, 1944, by the San Francisco Ballet. It was such an enormous success that the San Francisco Ballet has presented The Nutcracker every Christmas Eve and throughout the winter season, debuting new productions in 1944, 1954, 1967 and 2004. In Salt Lake City, it has been performed every year since 1963. The New York City Ballet gave its first annual performance in 1954. In addition to annual live stagings of the work, many productions have also been televised or released on home video.The Nutcracker continues to be one of Tchaikovsky's most popular compositions and contains some of his most memorable works. Tchaikovsky made a selection of eight of the numbers from the ballet before the ballet's December 1892 premiere, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, and is intended for concert performance. This brilliant brass band arrangement captures the brilliance and excitement of the Coleridge-Taylor's orchestral showpiece Danse Nègre from his African Suite, Op. 35. Born of an African father, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was an early 20th century English composer and conductor who was an influential advocate for Black composers. The five-minute arrangement is scored for a traditional British Brass Band of soprano E-flat cornet, B-flat cornets, flugelhorn, 3 E-flat alto horns, 2 baritone horns, euphonium, and E-flat and B-flat bass. A complete set of substitute parts are include for common band brass instruments being F horn substitutes for E-flat alto horns and all low brass instruments set in the bass clef. His numerous choir anthems offer dramatic performance opportunities for church or the concert hall.  His festival anthem SATB choral anthem Lift Up Your Heads is an expressive and dramatic work enhanced with brass quartet accompaniment of two B-flat trumpets and two trombones with alternate F horn and treble clef euphonium parts provided for the trombone parts. The organ/piano part can be used for chorus preparation as well as additional support for performances if desired. However, not using the keyboard part in its entirety for a performance in addition to the brass group will create a more interesting interplay of different timbres. Conductors should ensure accompaniment parts don't overwhelm the chorus especially if the keyboard part is added with the brass.
