It came a year after Faur's Nocturne in D flat major No. 6, which ended a six-year hiatus from writing piano music for the composer. Faur was also in the process of evolving his keyboard style toward bolder harmonic and thematic means of expression, but this work is largely conservative, even exhibiting hints of Schumann, especially in the main theme. That theme, marked Quasi adagio, is stately and presented in short, somewhat repetitive-sounding phrases. It has an expressive depth in its mixture of the noble and gloomy, of elegance and splendor. The first variation does not stray far in mood or in thematic change, but the second is lively and playful, exuding brilliant, almost Rachmaninovian colors. The ensuing variant is moderately paced, but still quite playful in its greater muscle. The music in the Molto Adagio sixth variation may offer the greatest depth here, and that in the Andante molto moderato eighth variation, the dreamiest and most serene. With the tenth variation, the music turns quite lively and colorful, and in the concluding 11th, the mood shifts to a quiet, reserved manner at the outset to a serenely triumphant one at the end.

Il Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra n. 2 in do minore, Op. 18 è il più popolare ed eseguito dei quattro concerti per pianoforte del compositore russo Sergej Vasil'evič Rachmaninov, nonché uno dei concerti per pianoforte più famosi di tutti i tempi. Fu composto tra il 1900 ed il 1901.Il terzo movimento riprende il tono marziale del primo movimento, ma con un'atmosfera più ironica. Il primo tema ha un carattere guizzante, saltellante; dopo una sua elaborazione, si arriva al secondo tema, dolcemente cantabile, presentato dalle viole e dall'oboe e ripreso dal pianoforte, tema che indubbiamente può essere considerato tra i più belli e i più celebri fra tutti quelli composti da Rachmaninov. Lo sviluppo centrale si basa sul primo tema, che viene spezzettato ed alternato fra il solista e vari strumenti, con un accenno di un passo fugato. Questo sviluppo si salda praticamente con la ripresa, che si afferma con il ritorno, adesso con i violini, del secondo tema. Da qui deriva una nuova elaborazione prevalentemente mossa che porta, con il cambio della tonalità in do maggiore, alla trionfale affermazione del secondo tema (che quindi è il vero protagonista del finale) a piena orchestra. Segue una breve coda nuovamente mossa che in un clima ora festoso e trascinante porta alla conclusione. Terminano il brano tre accordi ripetuti che rappresentano la firma ritmica del compositore: ta- tatata (Rach - maninov).Esiste una leggenda riguardo al famosissimo secondo tema di questo movimento. A detta del critico Leonid Sabaneev tale tema non sarebbe di Rachmaninov, ma di un suo amico, Nikita Morozov. Ascoltando un brano di Morozov, Rachmaninov avrebbe detto: Oh, ma è una melodia che avrei potuto comporre io. Ebbene, perché non te la prendi?, avrebbe risposto Morozov, e Rachmaninov non si sarebbe fatto pregare.

Rachmaninoff: Zdes' Khorosho, Op. 21, No. 7 (as played by Yo Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott) ARRANGED for VIOLIN and Piano.___________________________________________Здесь хорошо (Zdes' khorosho, How nice is here) was written in April 1902, in a sweet moment in the composer's life: he had overcome a creative block and had just married his cousin Natalia Sarina. Zdes' khorosho is n. 7 from Twelve Romances, op. 21, a beautiful song that talks about the bond between man, nature and God. It’s also a love song; One of the things I like the most is the balance between contemplation and passion that Rachmaninov accomplishes. The poem, by the Countess Glafira Adolfovna Einerling, a contemporary writer of the composer who wrote under the pseudonym of Galina, simply describes a sunset. I don't know if the landscape portrayed is similar to what Rachmaninov could see from his home but no doubt he felt it part of his own; he even changed the beginning of the poem so he said that the nice place was here. Zdes' khorosho is a song full of lyricism, seemingly simple but demanding for the singer (please pay attention to the pianissimo at the last verse, which seems to arise from nowhere), with an exquisite accompaniment. Some scholars think that the true essence of Rachmaninov is found in songs like that, rather than in his athletic piano concerts.Songs of Comfort and Hope is inspired by the series of recorded-at-home musical offerings that Ma began sharing in the first days of the COVID-19 lockdown in the United States. Over the course of the last year, Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsofComfort grew from a self-shot video of Antonín Dvořák’s Goin’ Home into a worldwide effort that has reached more than 20 million people. Ma and Stott marked the next chapter in the project with this album, offering consolation and connection in the face of fear and isolation.
