The Maple Leaf Rag is an early ragtime musical composition for piano composed by Scott Joplin. It was one of Joplin's early works, and became the model for ragtime compositions by subsequent composers. It is one of the most famous of all ragtime pieces. As a result, Joplin became dubbed the King of Ragtime by his contemporaries. Despite ragtime's decline after Joplin's death in 1917, the Maple Leaf Rag continued to be recorded by many well-known artists. The ragtime revival of the 1970s brought it back to mainstream public notice once again.

Donald Ashwander's adventure began when friends in England invited him for a weekend retreat in the picturesque countryside. Little did he know that this trip would provide the perfect backdrop for the birth of Waterloo Rag. As he made his way to Waterloo Station on that fateful morning, a catchy ragtime tune played in his mind.

The journey itself proved to be a source of inspiration. As the train pulled out of Waterloo Station and began to gain speed, the rhythmic click-i-ty-clack of the wheels on the tracks seemed to harmonize with the tune that had been humming in Donald's head. In that serendipitous moment, he quickly jotted down the musical idea in his manuscript book, and the foundation of Waterloo Rag was laid.

The composition captures the essence of the train journey itself, with its lively and rhythmic melodies mimicking the motion and energy of the locomotive. The piece seamlessly weaves together the clickety-clack rhythm of the train wheels with the vibrant ragtime style, resulting in a joyful and exhilarating musical experience.
