Piano Trio in A Minor, Op.88, Fantasiestucke was composed by Robert Schumann (1810-1856) in 1842. It consists of four movements, and the movement III, Duett, is remarkably impassioned. As the title suggests, the music is like a romantic story played by two solo instruments. The conversation by the tow changes its nuances phrase to phrase which leads up to a tragedy. Players will be forced to imagine what is happening in the story.

Australian composer Frederick Septimus Kelly wrote this work on the battlefields of World War One in memory of a fellow soldier, the poet Rupert Brooke, who died en route. This arrangement, for wind band, captures the tragedy, despair and reflection of a life lost and is ideal for the reflective component of a memorial concert.

Three Pieces For Violin and Orchestra Violin Concerto No. 2

Originally composed to mark the bicentennial of the state of Tennessee, O’Connor’s 2nd Violin Concerto was premiered with the Nashville Symphony during the 1996 celebration. The movements, Call of the Mockingbird, Trail of Tears, and Fanfare for the Volunteer reflect on broad themes relating to the history and culture of the state. The work was released in 1999 on a cd for Sony Classical performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra titled by its final movement Fanfare for the Volunteer.

Call of the Mockingbird;  The evocations of nature and landscape. In the course of its many voicings (both literal and figurative), the theme evokes a broad range of images, from the bird of the title to the ruggedness of the Appalachian terrain.

Trail of Tears;  The tragedy of the forced migration of the Cherokee Indians in 1838-39. An episode in American history, the work incorporates aspects of Native American, Celtic and Central European traditions within the broader context of a symphonic composition.

Fanfare for the Volunteer;  The fierce and bittersweet pride of the southeastern United States. Perhaps, the clearest blending of O’Connor’s background as a traditional fiddler with his more recent work as a symphonic composer. The occasional hints of Irish balladry evoke nothing so much as the keenest sense of longing.

Simple humorous song based on a satirical English poem by William Makepeace Thackeray (who is summarising the plot of Goethe's youthful tragedy with great irony Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (The sorrows of young Werther)) The song is written out just for voice and guitar chord names and versions are provided for voices of various types, in the keys of: C, D, F, G and B-flat The audio sample (in the key of C) is performed by the composer I have also translated the poem into German and French for those who would like to use those languages instead, under the titles: Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (German translation of the English poem) and Les douleurs du jeune Werther (French translation of the English poem).

A Butterfly Day carries hints of sadness combined with moments of joy. It could be used in many church settings such as preludes, offertories, Lent, or communion. The meditative aspects lend to giving it a personal, thoughtful interpretation. I have dedicated this song to the people of Ukraine because my prayer for them is that they are released from the tragedy in which they are living and once again have Butterfly Days which may not be perfect, but have moments of joy and happiness.

Eötvös wrote this piece in memory of the seven astronauts who lost their lives in the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy in 2003. The number 7 determines the musical, rhythmic and formal structure of the work: 49 musicians are divided into seven groups, and as well as the solo violin there are six further violins arranged correspondingly around the hall; and the solo violin itself portrays each of the astronauts and their different origin, from America via Israel to India, in folkloristically tinged cadenzas. 'The violin concerto Seven is a very personal monologue and the musical expression of my sympathy towards the seven astronauts who lost their lives while exploring space in fulfilment of a fundamental dream of mankind.'
