Even though I had an image of certain types of Chinese painting or silk ornamentation in mind when composing this piece, I chose the title Filigree because such jewelry is constructed out of similarly delicate lines. As one might expect, then, this piece is essentially a weave of intricately interacting melodies. Technically, it’s based on a series of overlapping pentatonic scales that appear as short melodic fragments and longer lines. There is a continual rising of overlapping patterns as the piece builds to its most luxurious and complex climax, then the texture simplifies as delicate lines trace out the ending. In terms of expression, I hope the bass will be played in ways that call to mind the thin and delicate lines of an erhu.Performance time is ca. 5:30.The single downloadable file for this piece contains the full score and two versions of the bass part: one in concert pitch and the other transposed for solo tuning.

Each one captures a mood, or the essence of a situation. Conflicting Interest is based on a situation in which one person’s attention is divided between two different interests. Musically, this conflict is created by having the flute and oboe play in what seems to be different tempos and meters. The second vignette, Drifting Away, was written for a promising former student who unexpectedly died during her first semester of graduate school. A series of pitches that leads to the note A at the end of this movement, which can be thought of as the goal of her final quiet journey. The title Breaking Free describes the feeling people get when they work through a problem or have a realization that seems to set them mentally or emotionally free. Certain rhythm and pitch structures control this movement until it finally breaks free with a moment of rhythmic chaos near the end. Because of the rhythmic/melodic interplay between parts, this piece requires intimate ensemble work.

The theme is quiet and simple, yet as the variations begin adding rhythms, melodies and textures, various musical styles, characters and dramatic expressions appear. When certain variations take on characteristics of jazz or salsa, audience members might even forget that they are still hearing the same basic chord structure. This piece is written so that almost any number of players can take turns performing it on either one, or two pianos. When fewer players perform the piece, one pianist can play two or three of the easier parts simultaneously. The minimum number of performers needed is four, but to facilitate the playing of cross rhythms, some groups may prefer 5 or 6 players in some variations. The theme played by the woodwinds is written to give the listeners a middle eastern feeling. This represents the crusades. The higher brass section play a nice and static counter theme.Part 2: Enchanted DominionThis section a bit mysterious and magic, played by mallets and flutes. The theme from the Oboe represents the ghost of a warlock trapped on the dominion. As we pas trough the dominion we need the protection of the church represented by the Harpsichord (clavecimbel) and clarinets.Part 3: The rustling ForestsAfter leaving the Enchanted Dominion we gallop with our horse trough the Rustling Forests. These forest show fast winds and have a lyric theme played by the trumpets and saxesPart 4: The SquareOnce trough the Forests we get to the Village square where the market is on going. We have several sales men selling their goods. These are represented in the themes of the woodwinds. The confusion gets to much and we try to hide from the sales men. The trumpets represent this part in a piano 5/4 movement which bring a big contrast trough the noises from the market place. In the end we need to get through the market place so we find a way to keep the sales men away by playing a wonderful legato melody which the dwarf’s taught us.Part 5: Dwarf’sThese social and kind people have a little village outside of the town where joyful melodies sound from both children as adults and elderly dwarf’s. the themes are divided under the different solo players of the woodwind sections.Part 6: Run or HideAfter a nice time with the Dwarf’s we continue our path but soon we face a large army coming our way. What do we do Run or Hide? This part is full of different melodies and counter melodies to represent the indecisiveness of the Dark Ages.Part 7: NeverlandWe arrive in the land of the elves where the tenor sax and horns play an agitato atmosphere to represent our hart beat when we see these beautiful creatures. The themes from the flutes and euphoniums show the grace and beauty of the elves. While the harp creates an elf like atmosphere.Part 8 The castle Gardenswe arrive in the castle gardens. These gardens are the most beautiful in the whole land. It makes the orchestra say Ahh. While the percussion section gives it a magical feeling. After being amassed we soon find out that these gardens are made for the Authorities and paid by our tax money which gives us a double feeling. Should this money not be better spend on good music?Part 9 Black Powderafter we find out the castle lord wrongly used or tax money we go and find some black powder to blow him up. After being hunted down by the castle lord trying to get some black powder. We find ourselves in the glorious fight.Part 10: Rageour glorious fight with the castle lord continues into an enormous climax where we are stroke down and ends up with a one way ticket to the graveyard.Part 11: The GraveyardThe whole orchestra sings a spiritual song to guide us into the afterlives. An angle comes to collect our soul (represented by the piccolo flute). And slowly or name is forgotten.

Bremner's original 1780 London publication. They were also arranged later by Hugo Riemann, and were again wrongly attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi.They are actually  3 movements from 2 of Domenico Gallo's Trio SonatasThey were used by Igor Stravinsky as a basis of the third movement (Scherzino) of his Neo Classical Ballet Pulcinella.The Pulcinella Suite for small chamber orchestra and 3 vocalists which was derived from the ballet, was written in 1922 and has no vocal parts. But even though Stravinsky used Gallo's (Pergolesi's) melodies and bass lines with little change, he managed to put his own unmistakable stamp on the music through his use of modern harmonies and occasional rhythmic modifications.My arrangement is of the the original Gallo pieces:The only change I have made is to move the bar lines so that my piece starts, as does Stravinsky's, with a quaver pickup, rather than Gallo's half bar and a quaver pickup.My arrangement uses Gallo's classical/baroque harmonies.It does not sound too dissimilar to Stravinsky's which sadly will be in copyright for many years.Check out my other arrangements of other music used by Stravinsky in his Pulcinella Suite.
