The reviews of the world premiere of the ballet at the Théâtre National de l’Opéra in Paris lauded Stravinsky's 'dazzling music in all shades of colour'; as a consequence, he composed two orchestral suites of his ballet. The version of 1919 is now published as a new edition with a modern notation and new orchestral material.Writing music to heighten dramatic situations, such as battle and crisis, was a speciality of Igor Stravinsky. In his ballet, The Firebird, premiered in 1910, the 27 year old composer surpassed many of today’s film composers by depicting a breathtaking battle between good and evil. Arranged wind quintetThis music was originally attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi, as they were so described in a Mr R. Bremner's original 1780 London publication. They were also arranged later by Hugo Riemann, and were again wrongly attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi.It is actually the 1st movement of Domenico Gallo's 1st Trio Sonata in G.It was used by Igor Stravinsky as a basis of the first movement (Sinfonia) of his Neo Classical Ballet Pulcinella.The Pulcinella Suite for small chamber orchestra and 3 vocalists which was derived from the ballet, was written in 1922 and has no vocal parts. This is the original music he used as the basis of the Sinfonia.But even though Stravinsky used Gallo's (Pergolesi's) melodies and bass lines with little change, he managed to put his own unmistakable stamp on the music through his use of modern harmonies and occasional rhythmic modifications.My arrangement is of the the original Gallo piece:The only change I have made is to move the bar lines so that my piece starts, as does Stravinsky's, with a quaver pickup, rather than Gallo's half bar and a quaver pickup.My arrangement is entirely in 4/4 using Gallo's classical/baroque harmonies.It does not sound too dissimilar to Stravinsky's which sadly will be in copyright for many years.

It is one of my favorite pieces of orchestral music and I've greatly enjoyed the opportunity to delve deeper into the score in order to create an arrangement which, I hope, does justice to the original.The arrangement is scored for wind quintet and piano, the same as the Sextet of Francis Poulenc; the timbres and textures of the Poulenc were a very helpful inspiration when it came to scoring the Stravinsky. While a lot of musical redistribution was necessary, I have tried to keep the 'iconic' solo lines on their original instruments as mush as possible, which hopefully explains some of the doubling on auxiliary instruments.Another useful reference point for constructing the arrangement has been Stravinsky's own arrangement of the work for piano duet. It was very informative to see how Stravinsky liked to write for the piano - how chords are distributed etc., and also which melodies or harmonies from the original he decided to leave out.Though tricky, it is possible to perform this piece without a conductor. It does take a bit of rehearsing, but hopefully this will result in a very exhilarating performance!
