Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in Holborn, London on August 15, 1875 and died from pneumonia at the age of 37 in Croy- don, England on September 1, 1912.  At an early age his grandfather began teaching him how to play the violin. His musical ability was obvious and at the age of 15, his extended family arranged for Taylor to study at the Royal College of Music. While at RCM he changed from violin to composition, working under professor Charles Villiers Stanford. His classmates included Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. He was later helped by Edward Elgar in 1898, who described Coleridge-Taylor as far and away the cleverest fellow going amongst the young men.  By 1896, Coleridge-Taylor was earning a reputation as a composer and was also accepted as an excellent conductor. In 1898 at the age of 23 he composed the African Suite. Danse Nègre is the last of the four movements that make up the African Suite, Op. 35 (proceeded by Introduction, A Negro Love Song, and Valse). Coleridge-Taylor saw it as his mission in life to help establish the dignity of the black man. He was greatly influenced by black American poet P. L. Dunbar. He made three successful visits to the United States to great acclaim. In 1904, on his first USA tour he was received by President Theodore Roosevelt at the White House. Above all, though, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was known as a man of great dignity and patience.

Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733039). Rascals! is an interesting piece that I wrote. I was commissioned by Bill Park of the North Roy-alton Community Band of North Royalton Ohio in early 2011. He wanted me to write a piece similar to one that contained familiar tunes from the Looney Toons cartoons of Warner Brothers that would sound like music used by the Little Rascals and Laurel & Hardy movies of the early 1930s. If you have ever seen these old movies you will notice that the music in the soundtrack never did coincide with what was happening on the screen (with the exception of a funny or romantic moment or a chase scene). It is as if you were watching a movie in your living room and some-body in the next room was playing his stereo just loud enough for you to notice the music. Well thats how I wrote Rascals! trying to keep Mr. Shields writing style intact while integrating my own style without covering him up. Rascals! was premiered by the North Royalton Community Band in their hometown in May 2011 and was well received by both the band and the audience.

Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733026). Gustave Louis Ganne was one of the leading composers of light music in France during his lifetime. As a young man he enrolled at the Paris Conservatory and while there Ganne studied composition with Jules Massenet and organ with Cesar Franck. Soon after leaving the conservatory Ganne made a name for himself with his compositions: marches waltzes mazurkas and many other types of music. He is best remembered for his theatrical works first his ballets and later the operettas. Ganne was also a highly competent conductor in the theaters of Paris and later in Monte Carlo. In Monte Carlo he established a series of extremely popular orchestral presentations known as Les Concerts de Louis Ganne. In 1901 he was elected president of the Societ des Auteurs Compositeurs et Editeurs de Musique. The French government later presented him with the Legion of Honor with extra orders. Ganne was loved and admired by those who knew him because of his character and prodigious talent. He died in Paris on July 13 (or 14) 1923. Marche Lorraine is one of Gustav Louis Gannes most well loved marches. It radiates a luminous sophisticated elegance. This march has played an important historic role in France and the Alsace Lorraine area.

Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733030). Boston Commandery is a Masonic march written by Thomas W. Carter in 1892. It was dedicated to the regional office of the Freemasony that was headquartered in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. In the march, Carter used the hymn Onward Christians Soldiers by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan as the melody for the trio, with the woodwinds providing the obbligato above the music. There have been many composers who were Masons; among them are Edward E. Bagley, W. Paris Chambers, Herbert L. Clarke, Merle Evans, Henry Fillmore, Karl L. King and John Philip Sousa. And Freemasony also includes in its ranks such musical luminaries as Louis Armstrong, Gene Autry, Count Basie, Ludwig van Beethoven, Irving Berlin, Roy Clark, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Paul Whiteman.
