We come to the end of this first part of the journey into Breval's cello sonatas by proposing the fourth one, in B-flat major. It is very interesting to see how all these six sonatas are firmly rooted in major keys, with fleeting passages to minor relatives, rigorously during the second movements. This Sonata has the longest first movement by far, and also a second movement that sails away from the Rondo form, proposing an Aria (Andantino) with two variations. Technically it is quite demanding, possibly the capstone of the sextuplet, coupling a richness in embellishments with long passages in the extended position.

Published by Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele (A0.1394956). The production involving the voice by Carlo Alfredo Piatti (1822—1901) is as vast as it is neglected. From about sixty songs for voice and piano, to almost twenty adding a cello, to several (though small) choral works. This edition kickstarts the unearthing of these unfairly forgotten gems, with the Canto Piatti wrote using the Exercise n° 7 from Duport’s Essai. This most famous etude, which every cellist will know by heart, provides the base over which the text by poet and librettist Felice Romani is shaped into a dramatic musical line.Also included is a rich preface with a thorough analysis of how Piatti interwove text and music together. The original text of Romani’s poem is included as well. The full score is accompanied by a cello part and a solo vocal part, as it was customary at the time.

For solo classical guitar; 2 pp; intermediate difficulty.Maurice Ravel (1875 -1937) Ravel was born in the Basque region of France and much of his work shows a Spanish influence (this, together with his interest in jazz has produced some exceptional guitar transcriptions). He was a pupil of Faure and at first fell, like many contemporary composers, under Debussy's spell. However, his ascetic and intellectual bents produced from the start a refinement of composition and orchestration, and development of melody, all his own. Later music, including the Concerto, shows his love of the rhythmic features of jazz, and thoughtful incorporation of the innovations of modern music – strong dissonance, atonality etc. Ravel wrote both music and lyrics for a number of songs including Trois Beaux Oiseaux du Paradis (Three Lovely Birds from Paradise - see below), composed in 1916 while he was posted in the French army during WW1, this at significant physical and mental cost (ref. Wikipedia).
