Carlo Alfredo Piatti composed only one more piece for cello solo, besides the Twelve Caprices, Op. 25, the Capriccio sopra un tema della Niobe di Pacini, Op. 22, published in 1864, but apparently performed for the first time in 1843 in Budapest. This edition thoroughly researches the surviving sources and the history behind the opera theme (an investigation on its own) and provides a modern, clean, and easy-to-play-from format for this 10-minutes-long virtuoso piece. The extra cello part is edited by Maestro Antonio Meneses after his outstanding recording in the CD “Capriccioso�, marking the start of a new great collaboration for our editions.

The full score is proposed as a faithful adaptation of Verdi’s original text, allowing scholars and the performers alike to analyse the voices’ distribution within the eight cellos. The separate parts, instead, are for the first time given in two different versions: one faithful to the original range and more suitable for a group of cello virtuosi and a more simplified one to allow good amateurs to enjoy this marvellous piece as well.   Dynamics, left untouched in the full score, have been slightly adapted in the separate parts to better achieve a balanced sonority. The same can be said for slurs and articulations.  Fingering and bowing suggestions follow a careful study on Verdi’s phrasing and, for further help, every part is adorned with the text of the chorus where the cello has the same melodic line.

Bernhard Cossmann is mainly known for his technical exercises and, possibly, for his Concert Etudes, Op. 10. They both feature catchy melodies and attractive harmonies, so much that you will find yourself subconsciously singing them during your day. The cello part is technically demanding, and yet is of great pedagogical value for students approaching pieces that are already firmly established in the repertoire.
