Pavane pour une infante défunte (Pavane for a Dead Princess) is a work for solo piano by Maurice Ravel, written in 1899 while the French composer was studying at the Conservatoire de Paris under Gabriel Fauré. Ravel published an orchestral version in 1910 using two flutes, an oboe, two clarinets (in B♭), two bassoons, two horns, harp, and strings.This version has been expanded for use by community orchestras to include saxophones.

This version adds 2 piccolo, a flute and a contrabassoon to a double reed choir (2Picc,Fl,3Ob,2EH,4Bn,Cbn). The gibet was a hook (gibbet), usually found near the entrance of a medieval town upon which some law offender would be suspended so as to warn visitors and the inhabitants not to offend. The ostinato throughout serves as a reoccurring focal point, much like the constant swing of the hook in the wind. It's dark, foreboding, and absolutely beautiful. This work fits well in recital, as well as serene settings. Length: 6 minutes.   Note to both performers: In keeping in a chamber music concept of sharing melody and accompaniment, the arrangers have decided against printing a completely separate trumpet part, as working from the score encourages both players to view the composition as chamber music, which aids in the awareness of the other performer, and thus creates the strongest possible performance.   Note to trumpeters: the flugelhorn works well as an alternative to the trumpet in this work.

It has been transposed from B to D major for classical guitar. The chords are full of Romanticism and venture away from the major tonality on multiple occasions. Techniques used include many neck positions, barres, hinge barres, dense chord voicings, hemiola rhythm and flamenco rasgueado. It is an advanced piece that sounds gorgeous with the resonance of a good nylon string classical guitar.

Sharing a passion for Spanish customs, like one of his contemporaries, Debussy, Ravel composed and dedicated this elegant work for his patron, the Princesse de Polignac, and he probably performed the work at the princess's home on several occasions. There have been thousands of performances across the world since then and is consistently voted into the ClassicFM Hall of Fame each year. This arrangement for brass band retains the original key and features several flourishes for vibraphone, which should not be rushed.
