This awesome depiction of a boat on a vast ocean was originally scored, like the composer's Alborada del Gracioso, for solo piano, and is also fearsomely difficult. Ravel later orchestrated both works, and his amazing gifts in this field give us extremely valuable insight into his imaginative conception of this watery scenario. Richard Simm was inspired by the magnificent orchestration to build upon it by arranging it for two pianos instead of one - a combination which Ravel himself often enjoyed using.

Trois Chansons (Three Songs) is a work by Maurice Ravel originally composed for a cappella choir written in 1915 in the spirit of nursery rhymes, with a Renaissance almost archaic sounding atmosphere.Ravel composed the Three Songs (Nicolette, Trois beaux oiseaux du Paradis and Ronde) in response to World War I while he was waiting to be drafted and he dedicated the songs to three people who might help him enlist in the military. The common theme in all the Songs is loss.Mr. Sauer has beautifully arranged the Trois Chansons for Four Horns. They are appropriate for advanced performers and total about 7-minutes in length.

Weihnachtsboléro - Little Drummer Boy in the style of Ravel's Boléro After promising a friend to undertake that task of combining Little Drummer Boy with Ravel's Boléro I soon came across a small but rather significant problem: Boléro is in 3/4 whereas Little Drummer Boy is in 4/4. Thankfully, Little Drummer Boy works extremely well transformed into 6/8 and this produces a wonderful juxtaposition when combined with the virtually static 3/4 rhythm of Boléro. Boléro is a masterwork of skillful orchestration and enthralling harmony, which results in an incredible crescendo - which lasts for a quarter of an hour! My aim was to achieve this same effect, however in a much shorter time frame! Essentially, this arrangement is based on the structure of Boléro, using elements of Ravel’s harmonic and orchestrational ideas. The importance of the second, contrasting melody is not forgotten, with the famous trombone solo combined with fragments of Jingle Bells and ... voilà! This arrangement is most effective with a snare drum, but it works well without. Jerry Brubaker presents this lovely work in a Concert band setting with all of the lush melodies and harmonies of the original work but with simplified ranges and a comfortable key. A marvelous choice for a truly beautiful piece of impressionistic literature!
