Despite hundreds of recordings and performances of his works, Kelly never collected money for his compositions. The fair was held from the 13th century up until the 1850’s and is also a slang term for a brawl or riot. In 1204, a license was granted to the corporation of Dublin by King John of England to hold an annual eight-day fair in Donnybrook. In 1252, the duration of the fair was extended to fifteen days. Over the subsequent centuries, the terms of holding the fair continued to change until it was decided in the 18th century that the fair would be held on the 26th of August on Donnybrook Green for a full fortnight.
