Contamine de Latour (1867 - 1926) - poet Charles-Gaston Levadé (1869 -1948) - composer Madame Clément le Breton - to whom Satie also dedicated another early piece 'Valse ballet' Conrad Satie - brother of Erik Satie Programme note: An ogive is the curve that forms the outline of a pointed gothic arch. Erik Satie gave this title to a set of four piano miniatures published in 1886 at the beginning of his career. Their calm, slow melodies are built up from paired phrases reminiscent of plainchant. He wanted to evoke a large pipe organ reverberating in the depth of a cathedral, and achieved this sonority by using full harmonies, octave doubling and sharply contrasting dynamics.

Performance tempos of the original composition are often slower than the published metronome mark of 50 beats per minute, typically resulting in a duration of around three to four minutes. The orginal key is E major, but in this arrangement it has been transposed up a semitone to F Major. If there is a single Contrabass recorder in the bars marked divisi the lower note should be played. Programme note: L'enfance du Christ is an oratorio by the French composer Hector Berlioz first performed in 1854. 'L'adieu des bergers' (The shepherds' farewell) was written as an organ piece in 1850. In the oratorio it appears in Part Two and is probably the most well-known movement, often performed separately.

This is a five part arrangement for recorders with optional drum.  It will work as a four part arrangement with the top four parts.  The range of each part is quite small, so most parts can be substituted by a lower recorder playing higher in the range - e.g. part [1] is playable on treble, and an additional treble part written in the treble recorder octave is supplied.  Likewise parts [2] and [3] would be playable on tenor as well as treble: thus it is possible to play this with all recorders in C (if no one able to play F recorder fingering is available).  I've followed the normal British naming convention for recorders, but players will understand descant to mean soprano and treble to mean alto.  There is an optional drum part.  In the set there is a score and sets of individual parts - many recorder groups prefer to play from the score, so the score is laid out as a two page spread, so that it can be used in that way.  The bass recorder can be an F bass (baritone) recorder, or a C bass, or even a contrabass, with optional lower octave notes given.

His catalog of compositions includes approximately 115 works for various ensembles, including Symphony Orchestra.   Sergio Roberto de Oliveira is a member of the Latin Academy of the Arts and Science of Recording. He died from pancreatic cancer in 2017.
