A Winter Aire begins with a simple hymn-like melody, it’s first iteration reminiscent of a chorale. But as the phrase reaches its natural conclusion, the melody shifts ever so slightly, and calls back to a folk song, something sung long before the rules of counterpoint were ever set. This Aire is at once seemingly familiar, but also mysterious, as it draws on the ancient power of the darkest time of year.

This Barcarolle (a composition styled after Venetian gondolier songs), is a highly melodic Neoclassical piece that pays homage to the Romantic composers as well as Venice. The rolling 6/8 feel points toward the gentle flow of the water, churning underneath the gondola in a Venetian canal. A simple folk melody starts and is later picked up by a second voice in harmony, imagining two boats passing in the evening light. For Intermediate Solo Piano.

Memory is the first musical cue we hear in Cowboy Bebop, a 1998 Anime. This theme, written by the ever compositionally elegant Yoko Kanno, is tied throughout the series to the protagonist’s memory of a love long gone. Originally scored for celeste, Reece’s piano arrangement begins close to the original setting, but then continues to develop naturally through subsequent iterations of the melody, with the final pass in canon, suggesting that memory is a mere echo of reality. The bridge is an homage to a hypothetical influence on Kanno’s the original theme, Duke Ellington.
