Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.739953 Composed by Maurice Ravel. Arranged by Len Rhodes. 20th Century,Concert,Holiday,Wedding. Score. 8 pages. Len Rhodes Music #3570051. Published by Len Rhodes Music (A0.739953). Len Rhodes has transcribed Ravel's orchestral suite for piano solo. In his book Impressionism, author Pierre Courthion writes how Ravel's Mother Goose Suite seems like a musical commentary to Monet's Waterlilies. Len has titled his transcription  - Reflections - containing the main movements from Mother Goose (Ma Mère l’Oye), with beautifully crafted segue's that create uninterrupted flow from movement to movement. Ravel originally wrote this ballet as a charming, delicate and imaginative suite of fairytale pieces. This transcription is a continuous work featuring - (i) the Prelude, (ii) Pavane de la Belle au Bois dormant (Pavane of the Sleeping Beauty), (iii) Les entretiens de la Belle et de la Bête (Conversation of Beauty and the Beast), (iv) Petit Poucet (Little Tom Thumb), and Le jardin féerique (The Fairy Garden). It is suitable for the more advanced (ABRSM grade 6/7) pianist, but will be appreciated by all lovers of Ravel, and Ma Mère l’Oye in particular. The music contains some larger chords so not entirely suitable for small hands. This is an extended work - 8 pages of music.

Small Ensemble Cello,English Horn,Viola,Violin - Digital Download SKU: A0.881261 Composed by Gary Powell Nash. Contemporary. Score and parts. 141 pages. Gary Powell Nash #5997423. Published by Gary Powell Nash (A0.881261). Gary Powell Nash has composed a total of four soulful works, which includes 2 trios and 2 quartets. Each of the soulful works are based on and inspired by an American popular musical genre, particularly either jazz, gospel, spirituals, rhythm and blues or some combination of those.  Soulful Quartet, No. 1 is the first work composed after that premise.  Furthermore, during the 2006-7 academic year, Nash took trips to Vietnam, Spain and Ghana and thus was inspired to compose music based on those experiences.  Soulful Quartet, No. 1 was the first composition written under that premise.   It consists of four movements.  Movement #1, titled The River is based on the song River in Judea as it begins with a slow introduction in compound duple meter and features harmonic progressions derived from the supporting tune.  This is juxtaposed with a song-like melody that is also reflective of the principal motive in River in Judea.  The following section features faster music, also in compound duple meter with cross-rhythms, derived from West African folk music.  Movement #2 is titled Reflections and is a slow movement in triple meter.  Movement #3, In One Lifetime is a fast, multi-metered work, mostly alternating 4/4 and 3/4.  Movement #4, Blue Mali begins with a slow introduction with a blues-like melody and transitions to faster music, also based on West African folk music.

Seen in this way, a concert reflects a value system that pits the individual against the group and poses a struggle of I against you. Surely this vehemence could be explained in a Beethovenian era when the concepts of human rights and individual freedom were fragile ideals. However, it is a different scale of values that my piano concerto tries to reflect: the idea of cooperation, of teamwork and of an orchestra as a living organism whose organs are not superior to one another, more vital than others, but fulfil different functions, qualitatively speaking.Every soloist plays a leading role, but this does not imply either subordination to the rest or denigration or subjugation of the rest. The fact that the soloist is sometimes in the foreground does not imply a victory over the others. The very concept of victory is meaningless here.At times, the soloist will fulfil a leadership role, at others he or she will underpin from passivity what is happening in the orchestra, intentionally from the shadows, as a grey eminence. And at other times - why not - he will question what the majority is doing. It is not a rough relationship of me against you, but there is also a we.The composition and orchestration of this piano concerto was made possible by a grant from the Senator for Culture of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.
