...My dictionary gives three definitions of 'Intermezzo,' also the name of a world premiere for violin and piano, Reiko Nishioka on violin and the composer, Gary Noland, on piano.  Included are the words 'light character.'  If so, the piece has intercalary intermezzos of its own smoothly segued between sections of sophisticated sobriety-or vice-versa.  I's a romantic romp, rhythmically robust yet melodically flirting with the nostalgia of cabaret, minus the sleazy diminution of spilled drinks and smelly ashtrays. Its elegance recalls Elgar, and the serious sides, a synthesis of those strange bedfellows Schubert and Ives. Composers hate it when their music reminds you of someone else's, but writing within a tradition, Noland has incorporated divergent styles that, woven together, work. This arrangement was created for virtuoso violinist Reiko Niiya's string orchestra, and remains faithful to the original arrangement. The Schützen (Riflemen's) Quadrille was composed by all three Strauss brothers together on the occasion of the Third German Federal  Shooting Competition in Vienna. Josef wrote the first two Parts, Eduard the middle parts and Johann the fifth part and the finale. It premiered  on 28 July 1868 in the Vienna Volksgarten. The arrangement is kept in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was  commissioned and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their  New Year's Concert on 6 January 2009 at the Great Hall of the Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, then again, now under the new name  Salzburg Wind Philharmonic at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2024 at the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg,  Austria and broadcasted live by Austrian television. Johann Strauss jr. composed this march in 1898 for the festival of the riflemen union in Vienna, Austria. The first performance  was in a version with a male choir and orchestra. Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme ist ein Kirchenlied von Philipp Nicolai aus dem Jahre 1599, veröffentlicht im Anhang seines Buches Freudenspiegel des ewigen Lebens. Die Melodie zitiert eine Wendung aus der seinerzeit bekannten Silberweise des Nürnberger Schuhmachers und Meistersängers Hans Sachs. Es findet sich heute im Evangelischen Gesangbuch (EG 147, 3. Strophe mit Choralsatz von Johann Sebastian Bach zusätzlich EG 535 als Abschluss des Stammteils) als Eröffnung des Abschnitts Ende des Kirchenjahres, was seiner Stellung als Hauptlied für den Ewigkeitssonntag entspricht; im alten Gotteslob (Nummer 110) stand es, wie im alt-katholischen Gesangbuch Eingestimmt (E 304) hingegen im Abschnitt Advent. Im am 1. Adventssonntag 2013 eingeführten neuen Gotteslob ist das Lied unter der Nummer 554 in der Rubrik „Die himmlische Stadt (Eschatologie) eingeordnet, im Gesangbuch der Evangelisch-reformierten Kirchen der deutschsprachigen Schweiz unter Nr. 850, im freikirchlichen Gesangbuch Feiern und Loben unter Nr. 287 und im Mennonitischen Gesangbuch unter Nr. 414.
