Vilson's descriptions of the tales that go with these melodies were a great help in setting the tone of this work. Many thanks to Vilson and Kandelab for introducing me to these wonderful melodies and rich cultural heritage. Minis Azaka is known as the great Minister of Agriculture in Haitian Vodou. Iwa peasants bring grievances to him and also reach out to him for prosperity.An invitation is made to a gathering along the countryside and this piece introduces a dignified Minis Azaka entering a hall adorned for his arrival. His followers trail behind him. He sits to listen to their gripes, but also joins them in dance as he isalso a well known dancer. He exits with the same reverence he entered, then disappears into the fields with his entourage. This piece expresses a veil of mystery and darkness setting the tone of great honor and respect. The Nago drum reference is included with the parts. The pattern should be played in reference to the slash marking in the score. The reference is meant as a guide and liberty may be taken with the pattern.

Originally titled I Cry to Thee, this work was commissioned by the Brazos Valley Chorale in the spring of 1998 and was first performed with choir and piano in May of the same year. This is the recording you will hear. The orchestration followed six years later in the spring of 2004 with the first full performance on May 23, 2004. Mass for the Soul possesses five structural elements from the psalms of lament: the address (and introductory petition), lament, confession of trust, petition, and vow of praise. It is this structure that forms the five movements. The way out of the depths begins in the possibility of prayer and the awareness that only the One who hears that prayer can draw us out of the depths. So the self that is caught in its iniquities cries out because of the need for forgiveness and because with God forgiveness is possible. The three Op.14 Quartets were advertised in the Wiener Zeitung on 15 January, 1791 as the composer's newest works. They were dedicated to M. Joseph de Preuer Senior, a lawyer resident in Linz. Although modest in scope and emotional depth, all three works reveal Hoffmeister as a craftsman of refined musical sensibilities. They show a clear grasp of the conversational style of the genre, as cultivated especially by his great compatriot and true master of the genre, Joseph Haydn, and reveal a kinship with the Mozartian string quartet style in their translucent scoring, harmonic richness and melodic invention. Hoffmeister's liking for third-related juxtapositions is frequently apparent, as is his awareness of the varied textural opportunities - duets and trio scoring for example - offered by the four voices. This item has, as its main editorial feature, the truncating or the many LH arpeggios that permeate this music. They have all been limited to a 10th range, at most, instead of the three-octave span that the original music employs. Now, these chords are all the same chords that C.D. used, but their span has been delimited, and the motion folds back on itself once each measure. ALL the roots and all the top tones remain the same. The effect is to limit the amount of attention one has to pay to the LH, and thus, frees more aural and digital awareness to be placed on the exquisite tune and the piquant harmonies. Full-length, original key, of course! Some re-assignment of voices to the RH, so the chords are clear, and the top melody note can be relied upon to be the real tune. MBB.
