I did this because I wanted the solos to be very expressive in interpretation yet free-form in structure. The companion recording presents my interpretation of these works. You may interpret them differently and that is fine! All solos are in notation and tablature. When writing these solos I first envisioned the form as an extended cadenza. However, from my earlier trumpet playing days I recalled that, especially in the 19th century, a cadenza was a momentary break in a solo which gave the performer a chance to dazzle the audience with his or her virtuosity. These solos are not about that. Rather, they are a vehicle to give the guitarist an opportunity to move the listener with the performer's expressive ability. I also thought of these solos in the form of a chant. However, most chants are monophonic in form and these solos in various parts present a fairly lush harmonic structure. While the solos were written for a 7 string guitar, they may be played successfully on a 6 string guitar. Alternate notes for those found on the 7th string are shown in the tablature part. Also, the solo, Peace, is written in Dropped D tuning and makes little use of the 7th string pedal tones. The solos are contemplative in nature and provide ample opportunity for individual expression and interpretation. I hope you enjoy playing and performing these works.

The verse and chorus are repeated three times, each time a little bit differently and explores the full range of the piano. I write this for intermediate to early advanced players--it is a good challenge! There are tricky double-note passages, and some interesting syncopated rhythms. This works for a recital piece or as accompaniment to how it is typically sung. In Scotland it would be verses 1 and 5, in other parts of the world verse 1 is often sung twice. This is followed by violins 1 and 2 playing the first verse and chorus, still accompanied by the bagpipe drones. La Philippine, H. 96 (Wq. 117/34) is one of dozens of short character pieces of great charm written by the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788), oldest son of Johann Sebastian Bach. As a composer, CPE Bach occupied an interesting transitional space between baroque and classical music and certainly helped to usher in the stylistic traits of the latter into general popular usage. The piece here is arranged for classical guitar solo at an intermediate level. It is more a transcription than a true arrangement, and every attempt has been made to keep the music as close to the original as possible. All fingerings are editorial, and ornaments kept simple. However, many expert pianists embellish these ornaments (sometimes very lavishly), particularly on repeats, and expert guitarists will likely want to do the same. Since the original music was written an octave higher, and to be played on the delicate-sounding keyboard instruments of the 18th century, some guitarists may want to experiment with using a capo to better create a more period-appropriate sound.Bach marks the style as Arioso (between an aria and recitative). In terms of tempo, various keyboardists interpret it very differently. Some play it quick and light while others opt for a slower, more lyrical approach. It was programed in the Euterpe: Spring and Autumn concert series Autumn 1995: A Night of Chamber Music, held by the Chew’s Culture Foundation. Most barcarolle pieces are in triple time, but in this piece I tried to depict the boat drifting on the ocean at midnight deliberately using quadruple time, and performing improvisationally. The cyclically falling or rising arpeggio represents the fluctuation of the waves. At bar 24, with a delicate D note, it changes to D minor. Please play differently between the first piano, piu piano, and the piano after the crescendo. At 32 it returns to major again and sixtuplets start trying to move the music forward, but still sempre piano, no crescendo. At bar 41 the music finally gets to the strongest part, but it's still mezzo piano. A long trill at 49 melts the intermediate part, and the recapitulation part follows at 52. Play expressively but calmly the phrase from 58 like falling stars.
