An ideal work for Christmas concert programming.This is a through-composed instrumental arrangement that explores the melody and harmonies of the Holst hymn in 3 differently arranged verses. After a short introduction the first verse uses Holst’s original 4-part harmonisation in its beautiful simplicity, with the first violin playing the melodic line. In verse 2, the viola presents the tune in a lower register while the 'cello plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The violins weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.

Most barcarolle pieces are in triple time, but in this piece I tried to depict the boat drifting on the ocean at midnight deliberately using quadruple time, and performing improvisationally. The cyclically falling or rising arpeggio represents the fluctuation of the waves. At bar 24, with a delicate D note, it changes to D minor. Please play differently between the first piano, piu piano, and the piano after the crescendo. At 32 it returns to major again and sixtuplets start trying to move the music forward, but still sempre piano, no crescendo. At bar 41 the music finally gets to the strongest part, but it's still mezzo piano. A long trill at 49 melts the intermediate part, and the recapitulation part follows at 52. Play expressively but calmly the phrase from 58 like falling stars.
