'Panta rhei - everything is in a state of flux' is the bottom line of what the Greek philosopher Heraclitus believed. 'Everything is in a continual state of flux and change' - to him, this was 'logos', rational order. It is at the interface between personal thought and archaic ritual that the four mantras for saxophone quartet have been created. In Hinduism and Buddhism, 'mantras' are sacred sentences, key messages, 'instruments of thought and speech'. They were addressed to the deities as a form of worship and way of concentration and mainly consist of continuously repeated syllables and words. With this in mind, each movement in 'Panta rhei' has been given a principal motif (especially a basic rhythmic gesture) which is repeated in variations and cycles but always differently - in a perpetual state of flux. Initially, I wanted to write something that is fun, upbeat, and in a jazzy style. Similar to the music from the game Mario Kart by Nintendo. The main theme comes after the short intro section and this idea returns throughout the composition in a rondo form where other sections are heard in-between the main theme.As this was my first time writing for brass quintet, there was a lot to learn about each instrument to ensure that everything was playable and sounded good together. Writing this composition as well as having it performed and recorded taught me a lot about writing for brass quintet and there are many things that I would do differently if I wrote this piece again.As for the name, there is a long story behind how I came up with it which I won’t get in to but the word ‘Zank’ is German for an angry argument and the word ‘Zippity’ is a made-up word that I thought sounded fun with Zank. Sometimes titles aren’t as deep as they seem to be!

It is in a suitable key for playing as a short recital piece or to accompany community or solo singing. For most occasions the arranger suggests playing it without any repeats, so that 2 differently arranged verses are performed. This works for a recital piece or as accompaniment to how it is typically sung. In Scotland it would be verses 1 and 5, in other parts of the world verse 1 is often sung twice. The work opens with ‘bagpipe’ drones played by the viola and cello, which accompany a short introduction by violin 1. This is followed by violins 1 and 2 playing the first verse and chorus, still accompanied by the bagpipe drones. The final verse and chorus are written in four part harmony to give a majestic ending to the piece.

In verse 2, the French horn presents the tune in a lower register while the bassoon plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The flute,oboe, and clarinet weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns to the flute and oboe with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.

I did this because I wanted the solos to be very expressive in interpretation yet free-form in structure. The companion recording presents my interpretation of these works. You may interpret them differently and that is fine! All solos are in notation and tablature. When writing these solos I first envisioned the form as an extended cadenza. However, from my earlier trumpet playing days I recalled that, especially in the 19th century, a cadenza was a momentary break in a solo which gave the performer a chance to dazzle the audience with his or her virtuosity. These solos are not about that. Rather, they are a vehicle to give the guitarist an opportunity to move the listener with the performer's expressive ability. I also thought of these solos in the form of a chant. However, most chants are monophonic in form and these solos in various parts present a fairly lush harmonic structure. While the solos were written for a 7 string guitar, they may be played successfully on a 6 string guitar. Alternate notes for those found on the 7th string are shown in the tablature part. Also, the solo, Peace, is written in Dropped D tuning and makes little use of the 7th string pedal tones. The solos are contemplative in nature and provide ample opportunity for individual expression and interpretation. I hope you enjoy playing and performing these works.
