Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Trio Clarinet,Flute,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1048505 Composed by Brad Howland. Classical,Contemporary. 12 pages. Linden Brass Press Inc. #652913. Published by Linden Brass Press Inc. (A0.1048505). I wrote this little piece for a clarinet-playing friend. It's basically my impressions of the sights and sounds of seagulls while walking around the city where I live. Seagulls seem to make an amazingly wide variety of sounds, and I think I was able to capture a few of them in this piece. I consulted with some professional woodwind players and was told the effects should work fine. Some of the oboe writing is apparently a bit low, and might be better played slurred. I often see a single seagull perched on top of a neighbor's house (who we nicknamed Egbert) - hence the quote from a popular tune.

Arranged by Raymond Fenech. 20th Century,Christmas,Holiday,Instructional,Multicultural,World. Score and parts. 31 pages. Raymond Fenech #3572221. Published by Raymond Fenech (A0.760331). Christmas Day is a choral fantasy on old carols, was written in 1910.  It was originally composed for SATB with parts for a sizeable orchestra. It lasts for about seven minutes. The work was dedicated ‘To the music students of Morley College’. Apparently it was extremely well-received and had a further presentation on 18 February at a music students’ ‘Tea and Social’ event. A number of well-known carols are used in this ‘fantasy.’ Throughout the piece, the composer makes use of ‘God rest you merry gentlemen,’ ‘The First Nowell’ and a traditional melody derived from Brittany used to set the words ‘Come ye lofty; come ye lonely.’ The Duration is approx. 6.16 minutes and the level is Advanced Intermediate.

Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1403559). This was originally part of a project composed for a group based on the Old Kent Road in London. They provided some lyrics which I set to music for them (around 1982), but the project never took off.I never met the person to whom the letter was addressed (called Howard Nicholls apparently...) but I got the impression that he did exist and meant a great deal to the group. The words (now lost) certainly brought out a romantic theme within the project. The pdf contains score and parts.

Full Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1395044 Composed by Alice Mary Smith. Arranged by edited by John M Laverty. 19th Century,Classical. 147 pages. Zephyrwindmusic.com #978510. Published by zephyrwindmusic.com (A0.1395044). British composer Alice Mary Smith (1839-1884) was in her early 20’s when she wrote her first major work, Symphony in C minor. Despite the many challenges faced by a female composer in Victorian era Great Britain, Smith’s composition received a high level of praise from the British press following the work’s premiere by the Musical Society of London in 1863. Despite this early praise, Smith never received the long-term recognization her talents deserved. Due to a number of factors, her orchestral compositions were not even published until the early 2000s.This edition is based entirely on Smith’s original manuscript. The edition is highly edited including an update to modern instrumentation and the addition of missing/inconsistent dynamics and articulations. The original hand-written manuscript contains many additional markings in pencil (also included in this edition), apparently added after the inked manuscript was complete.Parts are also available, and as with all Zephyrwindmusic publications, parts come with an Unlimited Copy License, thus removing any potential copyright issues. Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.933520 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, Cees Nieuwenhuizen. Classical. Score. 48 pages. Upstream Music #482215. Published by Upstream Music (A0.933520). There are many more unfinished than completed compositions of Beethoven that have been preserved. ln these fragments one sees ideas for individual works. A large number of sketchbooks and sketches from the composer were preserved and are housed in libraries and private collections all over the globe. Some sketches are no more than brief experiments or short elaborated ideas, but there are also fragments preserved that nearly give us a complete picture of a composition. In the so-called Kafka sketchbook, which was published in 1970 in London, approximately 500 fragments of manuscripts were bundled that stem from 1786 - 1799. The Fantasia Sonata in D (deest 45) for piano forte in three parts, was hidden in the archives since 1792. This sonata of the young Beethoven, with striking similarities to the Moonlight sonata and the Pastorale has never been performed on stage. Young pianotalent Martin Oei played it for the first time in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, October 21st, 2012. The large, over 1100 bars comprising torso now known as Fantasia Sonata in D from 1792, cannot be called a sketch anymore, although Beethoven has not completed the work and used many ideas in other, later works. The reconstruction of the sketches was done by the Dutch Beethoven musicologist and composer Cees Nieuwenhuizen. The piece was probably written in Bonn, three years before he started to write his first official piano sonata of a series of 32 sonatas. In November 1792 Beethoven went from Bonn to Vienna to study with the famous composer Joseph Haydn (1732–1809). Beethoven rapidly proceeded to make his mark as a brilliant keyboard performer and as a gifted young composer with a number of works to his credit. In 1795 his first mature published works appeared, and his career was officially launched. Striking harmonies The re-using of previously drafted material is quite common in Beethoven's works. Apparently the material wasn't yet ripe enough at the time of its origination, or perhaps Beethoven changed his mind with regards to the new composition. This could very well be so regarding the torso from Kafka’s sketchbook that we now call the Piano Fantasia sonata in D. This piece contains 1100 bars of music, not taking into account the alternative bars. The piece is composed by Beethoven in 1792 - 1793 and was set up as a tripartite sonata in D with remarkable abnormalities in terms of form and content. There are striking harmonies that cannot be found in other works composed in that same period. It’s possible that the composer didn’t have the courage to publish it or that indeed the time was not yet ripe for it. Finally the composer let the draft go and never came back to it. Or did he? Thematic similarities We find phrases in several later works that share similarities with ideas and themes from Fantasia sonata in D. The first part of Fantasia sonata has the same theme as the trio of the third movement of Symphony no. 7 (in A Major Opus 92). Even the key and also the rhythm in 3/4 time are the same. This cannot be a coincidence. Similar mood and thematic parallels can be found in the Pastorale, the Sonata for piano no. 15 (Opus 28): it is striking that this piece is also composed in D and in 3/4 time. We find similar dramatic expression in the Sonata for piano no. I 7 in d minor Opus 31 no. 2. The second movement of the Fantasia sonata nearly has the same theme as the second movement of the Sonata for piano no. 23 in minor (the Appassionato Opus 57). Martin Oei, Daiel Wayenberg, Cees Nieuwenhuizen at The World Premiere in The Concertgebouw Beethoven begins the third movement of the Fantasia sonata with the main theme of the first movement, but now in e minor. lts appearance in minor is an entirely new idea. Nevertheless Beethoven doesn't elaborate the idea any further because it disappears after 29 bars. Now a new agitated theme starts in d minor, which was announced in the first movement, but now reappears in its complete.

Lewis. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical. 10 pages. Derrick Thom. Lewis #964504. Published by Derrick Thom. Lewis (A0.1379804). Healy WILLAN Chaconne 1957 (from Rondino,Elegy & Chaconne, for Organ)Composer of over 800 works and teacher of over 50 years, Mr.Willan used to be known as the Dean of Canadian Composers and was a fixture of the Toronto music scene for a very long while. Apparently he wrote Operas and Symphonies as well, but these have not been easily available to experience. Perhaps this is just Canadian natural reticence or 'reserve'. However, it's a characteristic that is not conducive to cultivating popularity (needless to say). Nevertheless, Willan's music is simply lovely, and it's nice to know that, if you 'cotton on' to it, you will probably never exhaust the supply.Rondino & Elegy arrangements to follow soon.

Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1288901 By Roy Orbison. By Bill Dees and Roy Orbison. Arranged by John Holland. 20th Century,Film/TV,Pop,Rock,Singer/Songwriter. Score and Parts. 42 pages. John Ivor Holland #879740. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1288901). Featured, of course, in the Julia Roberts and Richard Gere film (1990) and now in its own stage musical, Oh, Pretty Woman was originally recorded by Roy Orbison and released as a single in August 1964, spending three weeks at number one in the US and, later that year, in the UK. The title was apparently inspired by Orbison's wife, Claudette, interrupting a conversation to announce she was going out. When Orbison asked if she had enough cash, his co-writer Bill Dees interjected, A pretty woman never needs any money. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number 224 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 2008, The Library of Congress selected the song for preservation in the National Recording Registry. A great song for any time of the year, your band and audience will love this toe-tapping classic from the 60s, sounding as timeless today as it did back then.

Piano Trio Cello,Piano,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1488223 Composed by Ferdinand Ries. Arranged by Dianne James. Classical. 64 pages. Artaria Editions #1065109. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1488223). Ferdinand Ries (1784-1838) was one of the greatest pianists of his time and a composer of exceptional abilities. Ries studied pianoforte (but not composition) with Beethoven in Vienna and the two men remained on cordial terms for the rest of their lives. In the last year of his life Ries co-wrote a book of Beethoven reminiscences that remain one of the most valuable sources of information about his life and character. The place and date of composition of the Sonate Sentimentale is uncertain in spite of the apparently conclusive evidence to the contrary: Ries's autograph score is dated 'Godesberg 1814' but by this time Ries was living in London. The discrepancy is probably due to the fact that Ries added the date to this manuscript, as he did to many others, in the 1820s. One of the most intriguing aspects of this work is the difference between Ries's original conception and the work as it appeared in its first published edition in 1834. The extent of the changes points to a substantial authorial revision of the work made prior to publication rather than a garbled transmission of the original text. Among the most striking of these changes is the inclusion of a brief introduction to the first movement; but other passages are extensively rewritten and in some instances lengthened by the inclusion of additional material. As with all Ries's works for flute, the Sonate Sentimentale is exceptionally well written for the instrument and yet perhaps even more impressive is the way in which Ries balances the musical texture and exploits the full potential of both the flute and piano. The beautiful work is arguably the most impressive flute sonata of the early 19th century. Allan Badley.
