One of the trials and tribulations of being a music teacher in the UK is the amount of time wasted in meetings that should really be held in the Maths department. On one such occasion, my Head of Department were so utterly bored and disinterested in useless information being imparted to us that we began a kind of musical chess game. Each of us in turn chose a length and a pitch and added wrote them down on a scrap of MSS paper that I found in a pocket. We had to make the motifs as musical as possible, while making it increasingly difficult for the other to finish off the current phrase. By the end of the meeting, we had completed the first phrase up to about measure 16. I took the scrap of paper home and developed it into this piece, which is actually rather good. The title is just We're Bored backwards! Enjoy!

The good shepherd, casts the price on the floor for the potter.♫ Zechariah is looking ahead to a time when the religious leaders of Judah were short on compassion and the needs of people. Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd. We see several parallel’s here in John 10. He called the religious leaders of His day, thieves and robbers, and predators. Bob Listokin was one of greatest individuals I’ve ever known. He taught me so much more than how to play the clarinet. His example of love, humility, and kindness has been a guiding force throughout my life. This little piece was written while I was little more than a child and one of the few compositions that I would risk publishing today. As I sat down to revise it, I was amazed at how it foreshadowed many of the defining characteristics of my current style. The piece has been murmuring in the back of my mind for thirty-six years much in the same way that I still feel Mr. Listokin’s gentle hand on my shoulder telling me to relax. Duration - 3:20
