Claude Debussy was, by all accounts, totally devoted to his daughter Claude-Emma (affectionately known as Chouchou) The suite Children's Corner (for solo piano) is dedicated to Chouchou. She outlived her father by scarcely a year, succumbing to the diphtheria epidemic of 1919. (with information from Wikipedia). The naming of one or two among Debussy's piano works can raise issues in the light of current trends. These were not an issue during the composer's life, but are unlikely to be ignored today. The word Golliwog may have unwanted implications, but its omission may cause confusion with another of the composer's short piano works known simply as Cakewalk. The cakewalk was a dance developed from the prize walks (dance contests with a cake awarded as the prize) held in the mid-19th century, generally at get-togethers on Black slave plantations before and after emancipation in the Southern United States.... It was originally a processional partner dance danced with comical formality, and may have developed as a subtle mockery of the mannered dances of white slaveholders. Following an exhibition of the cakewalk at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, the cakewalk was adopted by performers in minstrel shows, where it was danced exclusively by men until the 1890s. At that point, Broadway shows featuring women began to include cakewalks, and grotesque dances became very popular across the country. [Wikipedia] The grotesque aspect of some later cakewalk dance steps may well be heard in the accompaniment to this work: the oboist's endeavors to produce a soft low B-natural (!) will help create this effect.Technically this piece is intermediate, but the range of the bassoon (especially), oboe, and (to a lesser extent) horn parts are an additional challenge for those players.

This arrangement was commissioned for a particular group which explains the slightly unusual instrumentation of 4 Violins, 1 Flute, 1 Clarinet, 1 Trumpet, and 1 Trombone. Also by request, it is in the Key of Eb for High Voice.The voice part is unchanged from the traditional versions and by common custom just uses verses 1 and 3. The instrument parts are closely based on the original accompaniment but creatively express the arc of the text. It can go from violin duet to full ensemble and everything in between depending on the mood of the current lyric. Tremelos and trills are added when drama and tension are needed, sweeping runs for climaxes, spiccato technique for he shall break the chains, and so forth. As is my trademark, there is rhythmic interplay between instruments and subtle polyrhythms.Written as an accessible piece for an Intermediate group. A perfect addition to any Christmas program because O Holy Night is a 'must have' tradition and this dramatic and expressive version will please any crowd.(21 page conductor score; parts, 1-3 pages each; 41 pages total)A temporary MIDI recording to give you a general idea of the score. A sermon in itself, the poem recontextualizes the struggle of the Old Testament story of Jacob wrestling with an angel to current believers' struggles with faith. Isaac Watts, one of the fathers of English hymnody, stated that this poem was worth all the verses [he] had written. It is set here to a traditional Scottish melody, Candler or Ye Banks and Braes of Bonnie Doon, and arranged for SATB choir. It opens with a tenor soli, joined by the other voices. When the speaker makes demands of his divine opponent, the anthem modally shifts to the parallel minor. Eventually, the choir wrestles, as the four wrestling verses of the poem are sung at the same time in a 4-part canon. Finally, the speaker's epiphany is accompanied by a key change and a joyous conclusion in 4-part harmony.
