Submitted for 2015 Areon Flutes International Chamber Music Composition Competition I heard someone describe Key West as a conglomeration of the weirdest, most eccentric individuals in America. Add in the quirky shops, the feral roosters roaming the streets, the beautiful city beaches, and the relaxed island attitude prevalent in the Keys, and you’ve got something truly special. I’ve been to Key West twice, and decided to write this piece to capture the indescribable aura this place emits. The unconventional instrumentation was chosen to represent a group of random people come together, yet thriving in perfect harmony. Key West Sunrise starts slow and atmospheric, watching the sun peak over the horizon. The horn, cello, and bassoon sustain long notes while the vibraphone and harp provide flourishes of activity, before rooster calls rudely interrupt. And then we’re off-the morning is in full force, with jazzy ostinatos in the vibe, glisses in the harps, and the main theme being passed around. It builds and builds, and ends on a strong note-but with the feeling that there’s more to come. Because in Key West, there always is. JL, August 2014.

Horn in F O Come, All Ye Faithful O Come, All Ye Faithful is an English translation of the Latin Christmas carol Adeste Fideles. No one knows exactly who wrote it. One theory holds that King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656) wrote it. Another theory says John F. Wade or John Reading wrote it. Nowadays, we usually attribute it to John Wade. Seems like the oldest manuscript from 1751, is owned by Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. Lyrics The English translation O Come, All Ye Faithful was certainly written by Frederick Oakeley, a Catholic priest in 1841. This translation is probably the most common in the English speaking states. To begin with, the hymn had only four verses. Later, the verses grew to eight. Music directors often cut various verses because otherwise, the song goes too long. Some believe that St. Bonaventure wrote the first Latin lyrics. Others hold that King John IV of Portugal is responsible. Yet even others think the Cistercian monks wrote them. King John IV King John IV of Portugal was called The Musician King. He became king in 1640. In addition to performing the duties of a king, he was also a composer and music journalist. King John built a very large music library. Unfortunately, the library was ruined in 1755 because of the massive earthquake of Lisbon. In addition to building his library, the king started a Music School that produced many accomplished musicians. The king also worked diligently to get instrumental music approved by the Vatican for use in his churches. Aside from his authorship of Adeste Fideles, he is famous for another popular choral setting of the Crux Fidelis, a prevalent Lenten hymn. Performance in Context Verses are sometimes left out because all eight verses would take too long to perform. More to the point though, some of the verses may be unsuitable for whatever of the church calendar they are intended. The eighth verse deals with the Epiphany, so it makes sense to sing this on Epiphany Sunday, but not other Sundays. Similarly, other verses are used according to whether the event is Midnight Mass or regular daytime Mass.

Housman‘s poems by George Butterworth, reorchestrated for Chamber Wind Ensemble, was commissioned by the Maidstone Wind Symphony for their recent Concert of Remembrance entitled A Time For Peace.Composed in 1911 for baritone voice and piano, this collection of short pieces utilises poems from A.E. Housman’s A Shropshire Lad published in 1896. The words have been woven into a delicate and moving composition, with the emotions contained in the text expertly drawn out through use of dynamics and phrasing.The delicate nature of the original pieces has been kept, with the voices of the wind orchestra giving a new timbral twist to the music. The reality of growing up in wartime is prevalent in the theme of the music and is captured well by Butterworth’s original. There has been a few orchestral settings of these songs, but this arrangement is to be the first for wind band.Premiered by Martin Hindmarsh and a selection of the Maidstone Wind Symphony players, the performance was delicate and true to the original essence of the piano accompaniment.
