It is built on a series of leitmotifs, developed from melodic and rhythmic ideas as featured in the opening section. These reappear in different guises throughout the music. The piece follows an arch form – each section is referenced again later on in reverse order, with the ending an exact repeat of the opening five bars - hence the title 'Waterwheel'.The piece itself is reasonably slow, usually taking around 6 minutes to perform at the suggested tempo marking. This makes it appropriate for Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate players, either in a school environment or elsewhere.

Almost inevitably, the work's spinning 'rotations' come to a close as it reaches a similar state to the opening. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and advanced players.
