The Locrian mode was not a true church mode. It was given that name by jazz musicians, who wanted a modal designation for each of the seven modes for every major scale. This piece uses cut-time, and a half-note figure as its subject. The countersubject is a scale. Each exposition and its reverse end with a syncopated series of thirds, like the E Major Invention of Bach. These elements mix and match themselves through the piece, which ends on a B7 chord without a 3rd or 5th degree, giving the finale its ambiguous, Locrian sound. All nine inventions make a nice program for the opening of a three-element recital. They also make an excellent introduction into the world of modern music, since the two-part invention format is familiar, and the scalar aspect is also a musical staple throughout the eras, even though the modal derivatives rather than the parent major scales are used. This is pursued through a wide variety of musical elements. These include: circling melodies, repetitive chains of (modulating) chord sequences, motoric cross-rhythms and syncopation, heterophonic canonic textures, and large-scale concentric structures. The fast, first movement is in a loose symmetrical sonata form in D (modal) minor. The resolute and scalic first subject, based on the opening core motif, is followed by a transition to a more lyrical and repetitive, cantabile second theme. The ensuing development section passes through various keys, with a new, modal third theme at its centre, featuring parallel motion, syncopation, and an ostinato in the accompaniment. The varied recapitulation presents the opening two themes in reverse order (thus giving overall structural symmetry to the movement). The heart of the work as a whole is the slow romanza-like second movement, centred on G. In ternary form, the outer sections present a highly memorable lyrical theme in a series of modulating and canonic textural variations. The contrasting middle section is much more unsettled in its three varied statements of a new theme accompanied by uncertain minor sevenths chords. The rondo-like finale in D is the most minimalist in style and rhythm. A circling, motivic and scalic main theme appears between highly contrasting episodes. The first of these is a folk-like rustic theme, while the second is a sentimental melody, played over an arpeggio and descending bass line accompaniment. Heard 3 times, in 3 different keys and registers, this idea leads to an recap of the main rondo theme, signalling the end of the work. Overall, the piece is genuinely melodic and is accessible to the listener. The work is suitable for performance by higher grade or professional violinists and pianists. Five reed instruments play together, but the alto saxophone, knowing a world outside this classical-style reed quintet, chafes under the conformity and briefly plays a solo before returing to the fold. This alternation between the quintet playing together and the sax interrupting with a solo continues, causing tensions to boil. Both the ensemble sections and the solo sections become more chaotic, before the whole ensemble breaks from its constraints and begins playing in a bebop style. The oboe tries to restore order, however, and one by one, the other instruments other than the sax return to their initial classical-style playing, choosing to play the initial section in reverse. The sax, furious, rages at the other instruments to broaden their thinking, and in response, each instrument introduces its own, unique solo. The oboe is the last to join in the fun, but gives in at last, before all five instruments make one final outburst at the end of the piece.
