Few registrations are given, as it is expected that organists will need to solve registration challenges with the instrument at hand, and thus flexibility is expected. This collection is dedicated to the Memory of Dr. Marilyn Mason (Madame Mason) who taught at the University of Michigan for 63 years. Pleyel's Op.2 String Quartets were first published in 1784 by the Viennese publisher Graeffer. They were advertised in the Wiener Zeitung on 15 December of that year and appeared with a dedication to Joseph Haydn. All six works reveal Pleyel as a composer of considerable skill and accomplishment. Thematic invention is consistently high across all six works and some movements, many of the sonata forms in particular, are remarkable for the rich variety of musical material presented.

The original folk story related in the song was associated with the coming New Year, which, in pre-Christian Ukraine (before 988), was celebrated with the coming of spring in April. The original Ukrainian title translates to the generous one is derived from the Ukrainian word for bountiful (shchedryj), and tells a tale of a swallow flying into a household to proclaim the bountiful year that the family will have. I’m happy that i did an arrangement of this magic music. I was trying to save Leontovych’s polyphonic idea and reveal the piano sound at the same time. I hope you like it!

My Kaddisch für David Stahl was conceived to honour the memory of the long-serving chief musical director of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich and begins with a lyrically flowing lament on the clarinet which towards the end rears up in a despairing wail of grief. The piano and double bass punctuate the arching structure of the melody with an aggressive and urgent three-note phrase which should sound as if ’hammered in steel’, symbolising the three syllables ’Da-vid Stahl’. The work culminates with an original Jewish melody for Psalm 119 with the following text: ’Your word is a lamp to my feet, shadows and light reveal the width and depth of the path of my life.’ Wilfried Hiller.
