Grieg did not write any music for the organ, but some of his short compositions for piano in his multi-opus series of Lyric Pieces can be successfully adapted for performance on the pipe organ.  I have arranged several of them, employing 3-stave scores, along with indications for what manuals to play on, and suggestions for registration changes.  My arrangements reveal, I think,that Grieg's piano pieces take on new dimensions with the organ's variety of timbres and wide dynamic range.  They all would serve well on a recital program and some could be used in church services as well.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other arrangements for organ in my Grieg Transcription Series.  You may also be interested in my many hymn tune arrangements, some for organ and others for piano.

That is the reason he had two names, Lasso (Italian) and Lassus (German). I played with this fact and explored the possibilities of solfege ‘La-sol’. Lasso's bicinia is paraphrased several times in the piece. There is a timbral cannon toward the end where second cello strictly follows the viola's gesture. It is then dissolved to an improvisatory coda to once again reveal the very theme La-Sol.

Bells set the tone with a simple three-note melody as twilight falls and the first stars appear. Percussion effects represent crickets and cicadas chirping in the background. The texture becomes more chorale-like as related but distinct themes reveal themselves, representing rising constellations. As the star themes gently roll by, the harmony grows warmer and the melody becomes more grandiose in preparation for the final star-rise: the arrival of the morning sun. Published by Nick Elliott (A0.997516). First Movement:In many ways this first movement can be summed up in one word: introspective. It is also a piece that reflects on landscapes of nature. A slow movement, it is essentially written around one main motif that is the driving force behind the movement. This motif becomes longer in the second movement eventually becoming the theme of the string quartet serving as a device to unify all of the movements.Second MovementThis movement is faster than the first, the melodies more fragmentary, more rhythmically driven. It is less introspective and more extroverted and restless. Exploring and expanding on the harmony of the first movement by exploring sound clusters, secundal and quartal harmony, while also playing with tonality more than the first movement did. The idea of rhythmic cells are also briefly explored inspired by Aleatoric music. The movement ends with the serene sound of the first violin in solo combining all three motifs to reveal the theme of the string quartet.The idea of thematic unity is a concept that is explored heavily with this string quartet and will be explored even more in the third and fourth movements.

Like his younger compatriot Leopold Koželuh, Johann Baptist Wanhal derived a considerable part of his income from teaching, and his large output of keyboard music – which includes solos, chamber works with keyboard and instructional pieces – reflects this. Along with the usual sets of variations, dances and other small-scale works, he published sonatinas and progressive sonatas for young performers which reveal his experience as teacher and his gift of making the simplest music attractive as well as instructive. Wanhal’s output of solo keyboard music also includes far more complex and ambitious works, among them, several sets of pieces styled “Capriccio”. These works are in essence multi-movement sonatas, their capriciousness largely evident in their discursive first movements which include an element of modest tonal adventure. The works are very attractive, technically demanding yet well within the scope of the many fine amateur fortepianists in Vienna. Wanhal’s capriccios were eagerly sought after in other centres as well and were issued by publishers in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Offenbach am Main as well as in Vienna.

The original folk story related in the song was associated with the coming New Year, which, in pre-Christian Ukraine (before 988), was celebrated with the coming of spring in April. The original Ukrainian title translates to the generous one is derived from the Ukrainian word for bountiful (shchedryj), and tells a tale of a swallow flying into a household to proclaim the bountiful year that the family will have. I’m happy that i did an arrangement of this magic music. I was trying to save Leontovych’s polyphonic idea and reveal the piano sound at the same time. I hope you like it!
